Night 1 ~ The Man From Snowy River

Tagline ~ The story of a boy suddenly alone in the world. The men who
challenge him. And the girl who helps him become a man.

Directed by George Miller (All the Rivers Run and The Neverending Story II) and released on November 5, 1982 by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation (Rated PG). To earn money to save his father's farm, Jim (Tom Burlinson) moves to the lowlands of Australia to work. There he meets and falls in love with Jessica (Sigrid Thornton). But of course, as we all know, love is never an easy road!

For the last two years my mom has picked the first night's movie. The first movie she chose, Raintree County, had an overwhelmingly warm response from our readers. The second movie, Hachi - A Dog's Tale, surprisingly was not well received! I guess the majority of our readers drew the line at sad animals. Oh, poor Hachi.

This time she chose a wonderful movie from the 1980s called The Man From Snowy River. At the time this was released it was a box office success and even spawned a sequel, Return to Snowy River. It is a classic story of boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, girl's father deems boy not worthy, boy must prove himself, all set against a beautiful Australian backdrop.

The most iconic scene from this movie is Jim's famous cliff ride where he rides the horse down the cliff. No worries, these horses really do that!!! Quite an impressive scene.

You can currently find The Man From Snowy River on Netflix streaming.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. "The Man From Snowy River" was a poem written by A.B. "Banjo" Patterson, and published in The Bulletin, 26 April 1890. Patterson himself, along with the words of the poem, are immortalized on the Australian $10 note.
2. This picture was one of fifty Australian films selected for preservation as part of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia's Kodak / Atlab Cinema Collection Restoration Project.
3. The movie contains numerous references to A.B. "Banjo" Patterson, besides being based on his poem. Patterson himself is a character in the movie, as is Clancy from the poem "Clancy of the Overflow" (Clancy also makes an appearance in the poem "The Man from Snowy River") Harrison's wife was named Matilda. Patterson wrote the song "Waltzing Matilda" and the melody can be heard at the very end of the movie.
4. Tom Burlinson performed all his own horse riding stunts in the film
5. Burt Lancaster and Robert Mitchum were also considered for the dual role played by Kirk Douglas.

  11. I have never seen this but it looks interesting. And by the way, I loved the Hachi movie, though it was sad because it was memorable (and a true story too).
