Tonight's Clue ~ An escort and a kept man find love in New York.
Night 11 ~ About A Boy
Directed by Paul and Chris Weitz (American Pie, Down to Earth and Admission ) and released on May 17, 2002 by Universal Pictures (Rated
PG-13). An independently wealthy bachelor (Hugh Grant), who likes his carefree life, meets a boy (Nicholas Hoult) who wants to find a husband for his mom. The two end up forming a bond that neither of them expected.
Tonight's movie is an example of a different kind of love story. Not that of a couple but of a father and son. This is truly a heartwarming and very funny movie. Hugh Grant is at his best here as the bachelor who has no worries in the world and has no problem with doing nothing with his life. He knows he's a bum and he loves it. Some of the best humor in the film comes from his so wrong way of thinking.
Enter Nicholas Hoult's (who would grow up to be the main Zombie in Warm Bodies) character who is struggling with being the outcast at school and living with a mother who is suffering with severe depression. It's heartbreaking and yet funny watching him cope with what life has put on his plate.
Watching the two characters start to care about each other and eventually become a family of sorts is a wonderful movie experience. When this poor kid gets up on stage to sing his mother's favorite song, just because it will make her happy even though it will bring a world of hurt on him with his peers, about brings tears to your eyes. Then when he gets a "little help from his friends" you can not help but laugh. This is just one of the greats.
And remember, like Jon Bon Jovi said "No man is an island". Ha!!!

Some trivia about the movie.
1. About a boy is based on a 1998 novel. In the novel, the music that Will introduces Marcus to - and so in turn bonds with Ellie over - is not rap, but the band Nirvana. The book is actually set during the 1993-1994 period, and the story climaxes with the kids learning of and being affected by Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain's 4/5/94 suicide (which within the context of the story has additional significance for Marcus). The title of the story is itself a pun on the Nirvana song "About A Girl".
2. The quote "No man is an island" which Will jokingly attributes to Jon Bon Jovi, was actually written by John Donne in 1624, in his work "Meditation XVII".
3. At the beginning of the film Marcus says he would be able to take care of his mum (Toni Collette) if he were Haley Joel Osment. Toni Collette played Haley Joel Osment's mother in The Sixth Sense (1999).
