Night 10 - The Mist

Tagline - Stephen King's Legendary Tale of Terror
               Fear Changes Everything

Directed by Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile) and released on November 21, 2007 by MGM (Rated R). A storm unleashes bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.

I really like this movie. The real horror of the story is how people react in a dire situation like this. OK, so maybe the creatures are a little silly but that doesn't matter. Be it insects, Zombies or nuclear fallout, human kind never fairs very well after a major catastrophe. I find it interesting and truly frightening to watch how people turn on each other.

The best part of this story is the ending. If you haven't seen it I won't give it away. Lets just say it is the most non Hollywood ending I've ever seen and that's what makes it so great. It's horrible, hard to watch, and you'll feel like someone kicked you in the gut but it's the perfect ending to this tale.

Some trivia about the movie
1. In the opening shot of the film, David is painting in his room. The picture he's drawing is a design from Stephen King's Dark Tower series of the gunslinger Roland. Another design in the room is that of the poster of John Carpenter's The Thing. John Carpenter also wrote and directed The Fog, which shares obvious themes with The Mist.
2. During an action scene in the film, a man runs into a wire rotating-book shelf in the grocery store. If you look carefully, you can clearly see that all the books on the shelf are written by Stephen King.
3. When the group is in the next-door pharmacy, David (Thomas Jane) can be seen taking a comic book as promised for his son - an issue of "Hellboy". Later in real life, Jane directed the comicbook movie Dark Country which starred Ron Perlman, the star of the movie version of Hellboy.
4. Frank Darabont agreed to make the film with Dimension only under the condition that no matter what, they wouldn't change the scripted ending. They agreed.
5. Director Frank Darabont originally wanted the film shown in black and white. The 2-disc DVD release contains Darabont's black and white version on the second disc.
6. The Dark Tower poster being worked on by David Drayton was actually painted by Drew Struzan, an artist famous for his movie posters. (Star Wars, Indiana Jones franchise, Harry Potter franchise, The Thing, Blade Runner, etc.) All of the posters in the studio at the beginning of the film were painted by Struzan, as was the film poster for this film.
7. Despite the setting in Maine, the film was shot entirely in Minden, Louisiana. To Frank Darabont's delight, Stephen King could not distinguish it from Maine when watching the film.
8. Director Frank Darabont wanted to cast Stephen King in a supporting role, but King turned his offer down. The role eventually went to Brian Libby.
9. The third film Frank Darabont has adapted from Stephen King's work. The other two are The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
10. Stephen King says that he was genuinely frightened by this adaption of his novel; Frank Darabont described that as the happiest moment of his career.
11. Norm is wearing a T-Shirt from WKIT Radio in Bangor, Maine. This is one of three radio stations owned by Stephen King.
12. Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, and Melissa Suzanne McBride would all later go on to work together again in the AMC series "The Walking Dead", another post-apocalyptic survival type series, a few episodes of which were also produced and directed by Frank Darabont.
13. Stephen King got the idea for the source novel when he was in a Maine market. When he noticed the front window was made of plate glass, he wondered what would happen if giant insects flew into it.
14. To help save time on the tight schedule, the producers and director Frank Darabont hired the camera crew from The Shield, to shoot the film. This camera crew is able to move fast, due to the hectic TV production schedule. There was an "A" and a "B" unit, which cut down on production time.

  3. While the ending made sense, I didn't like it. It left me with the feeling of 'what happened next?' . Still want to know where the insects came from, to begin with.

  4. I first read the short story The Mist years ago and totally LOVED IT. The movie has an awesome cast and I love the religious tension, showing how people would react. Love the underlying rip in the dimension and its the military's fault.

  5. I hated the movie ending...at least the story left it open. I won`t
go into my reasons why because I see some people have not seen it yet and I don`t want to spoil it for them.

  15. I liked this movie, too. The dynamic among the entrapped was interesting to watch. Creepy and a little claustrophobic in parts, which played on my biggest fear...
