Night 14 ~ Say Anything

Tagline - She's got every thing going for her.
He's going for her with every thing he's got.

Directed by Cameron Crow (Almost Famous) on released on April 14, 1989 by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (Rated PG-13). Lloyd (John Cusack) and Diane (Ione Skye) fall in love the summer after graduation. When Diane gets a scholarship to study in England she has a choice to make. Listen to her father and dump Lloyd or listen to her heart and stay?

I love this movie. It doesn't get much better than this. This movie came out the same year I graduated from High School and it was Seattle before it was trendy to set everything in Seattle. Lloyd is charming and sweet. Diane is beautiful and warm. The movie is funny, sweet and even a little heart breaking. It is love at it's most simple and "basic". Ha!

Best line - "I gave her my heart and she gave me a... pen." - Lloyd

Go watch it now!!!

Say Anything is available to rent or stream from most DVD services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie...
1. The Smithereens were commissioned by Cameron Crowe to write the theme song for the movie, and they came up with "A Girl Like You". Crowe thought that the lyrics were too leading (they outline the entire plot), so he rejected it in favor of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". "A Girl Like You" went on to be included in The Smithereens' next album, "11", and in the movie Backdraft (1991) by Ron Howard.
2. Director Cameron Crowe couldn't find the love song he wanted until he heard Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". Gabriel asked to see part of the movie. Crowe had the production company send him an unfinished cut. Gabriel responded by saying he would let them use the song, as he liked the film. He was, however, wary about the part where the lead character overdosed at the end. It was then that Crowe realized that Gabriel had been sent a copy of Wired (1989) instead.
3. When Lloyd (John Cusack) drives along 45th street in Seattle, he passes the Guild 45th Theatre, which is showing Tapeheads (1988), in which Cusack also appeared.
4. Kirk Cameron was nearly cast as Lloyd instead of John Cusack.
5. John Cusack's kick boxing scenes in the ring, including the one where his nose is broken, are done with Don 'The Dragon' Wilson who is a real-life kick boxing champion.
6. Robert Downey Jr. turned down the lead played by John Cusack.
7. Christian Slater auditioned for the role of Lloyd Dobbler but director Cameron Crowe was adamant about getting John Cusack. Also, there was a tie between Ione Skye and actress Jennifer Connelly for the role of Diane Court.
8. Director Cameo: [Cameron Crowe] and wife Nancy Wilson as pedestrians in front of the mall as Lloyd passes by while recalling the site of their first "date".
9. The dojo featured in this movie is the same one that was used in The Karate Kid (1984) as the Cobra Kai dojo.
10. When Lloyd holds up the radio, it is actually playing a song by the group Fishbone. "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel was added post-production.
11. Lloyd makes several references in the movie to "Bell Square" mall, short for Bellevue Square (located in Bellevue, Washington). When Lloyd is driving in the rain and sees the mall, he is actually driving by Westlake Center (located in downtown Seattle).
12. Producer James L. Brooks said what inspired this movie was an incident where Brooks saw a man walking with his daughter. He saw them and wondered what would happen if the father committed a crime. Those thoughts were used to create the story.
13. The original Australian VHS release through CBS Fox features an early Simpsons short.
14. John Cusack put a scar on his right eyebrow for Lloyd's character. He says that the story behind that is that someone threw a rock at Lloyd when he was a kid.
15. The movie's line "I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen." was voted as the #73 of "The 100 Greatest Movie Lines" by Premiere in 2007.
16. Bebe Neuwirth's film debut.
17. Lloyd and Diane's school appears to be based on The Lakeside School, which is a very prestigious Seattle private school. In the movie, the school is called "Lakewood" (and has a rooster mascot, rather than a lion), but in Lloyd's first phone conversation with Diane, John Cusack mentions that at his annual party, Lloyd "dresses up as the Lakeside rooster."
18. Ione Skye once dated Anthony Kiedis, lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose song "Taste the Pain" opens the movie.

Fear Friday ~ Beware Your Valentine or Why You Should Always Be Nice To The Nerdy Kid.

It's Friday and time for another Fear Friday here at the Laughing Vixen Lounge blog. All month long the films share the theme of Valentine's Day and Love. This week's selection is a slasher film from the 2001 that teaches us a very important lesson about being nice to the nerdy kids in school. It may come back to haunt you one Valentine's Day! Enjoy!

Make sure to stop by the 5th annual 14 Nights of Valentine's Day Giveaway for the chance to win a $200 Prize Pack. Leave a comment on this post with your opinion of the movie to get an extra entry. Find full details on the main Giveaway Post.

Every Friday at the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog is Fear Friday. Fear Fridays are a celebration of all films spooky. Horror is a very broad genre and the Lounge loves it all. Each Friday you will find a review of a different film. These can range from Classic Horror (black and white and cheesy), Thrillers (suspense, jumps and a good mystery), outright Horror (chop chop, slash slash, die die) and anything else in between.

So pop some popcorn, kill the lights and enjoy tonight's selection. And please, share your comments on the film. Bad or good let me know what you thought of it. And now, my little ghouls and dolls, the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog is proud to present this week's film.

*********************
While this month is all about Valentine's Day we could not ignore today's date. Here's wishing everyone a happy Friday the 13th! Now go hug someone you love.

Fear Friday - Valentine

Tagline - Scared to be alone on Valentine's Day? You should be.
Remember that kid everyone ignored on Valentine's Day? He
             remembers you.

Directed by Jamie Blanks (Urban Legends and The Long Weekend) and released on February 2, 2001 by Warner Brothers (Rated R). When a group of friends start to die off they begin to suspect a former classmate that they wronged. Could it be him or is it someone much closer? Muahahahaha!!!

This is a fun little slasher movie. It's your basic chop chop slash slash film with a Valentine's Day theme. A group of girls embarrassed a boy in school. Flash forward to their twenties. It's Valentine's Day and the group starts to die off one by one. While this is nothing new story wise I still found it to be an interesting watch. They do a pretty good job at making you think the killer is one person, then another and so on.

Not that any movie with Denise Richards in it would be high on my list but hey, most people do not last very long in these movies! If you are looking for something bloody this Valentine's Day instead of sappy this is a good choice. Pair it up with My Bloody Valentine and you will have yourself a great anti Valentine's Day double feature.

Valentine is available to rent or stream on most DVD services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. In one scene, Kat tells Dorothy that her boyfriend, Adam Carr (David Boreanaz), is 'no angel'. This is, of course, referring to Boreanaz's hit TV series, Angel (1999).
2. During the original casting process, Tara Reid played "Dorothy Wheeler' (now played by Jessica Capshaw) and Jennifer Love Hewitt played "Paige Prescott" (now played by Denise Richards).
3. Shot in 42 days.
4. At a cost of $10 million this is the cheapest film to ever have a Superbowl spot.
5. Luke Wilson and Jeremy Sisto were considered for the role of Adam Carr.

Tonight's Clue ~ An 80's classic where the good guy gets the girl.

Night 13 ~ Breakfast At Tiffany's

Tagline ~ Audrey Hepburn plays that daring, darling Holly Golightly to a
              new high in entertainment delight!

Based on a novel by Truman Capote and directed by Blake Edwards (The Great Race, The Pink Panther and 10) and released on October 5, 1961 by Paramount Pictures. A young writer Paul (George Peppard) meets Holly (Audrey Hepburn) his quirky neighbor. It doesn't take long before Paul is in love with Holly, like most everyone who meets her. But can Holly return his love or is she looking for something bigger?

This is a classic and for good reason. Audrey Hepburn plays the slightly scattered but completely lovable Holly, an escort longing for love but afraid to have it. George Peppard is the struggling writer and kept man Paul, who has just moved in upstairs. The movie plays on the themes of loss, sadness and loneliness but ultimately love and learning to trust.

While the film does have heavier moments it also have humor and is a gorgeous example of the late 50's/early 60's in film. Audrey is wonderful to watch in her fabulous fashions and bohemian lifestyle. New York makes a beautiful backdrop for this slice of nostalgia. It is also a great throwback to a time were drinking was a very glamorous pass time. My stars, do these people drink!

While I have not read the Truman Capote novel this was based on I know it varies greatly. So greatly that Mr. Capote was far from happy with it. I can imagine as it was loosely based on his own life with the character Paul created around himself. But if you have not read the book, or can separate the two, this is a movie gem that is well worth a watch.

Breakfast At Tiffany's is currently available to stream on Netflix and is available on most DVD rental and streaming services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. Audrey Hepburn said the scene where she throws Cat into the rainy street was the most distasteful thing she ever had to do on film.
2. Audrey Hepburn hated Danish pastries, making filming the famous opening scene a bit of a chore for her.
3. Although not visible on camera, hundreds of onlookers watched Audrey Hepburn's window-shopping scene at the start of the film. This made her nervous and she kept making mistakes. It wasn't until a crew member nearly got electrocuted behind the camera that she pulled herself together and finished the scene.
4. Elements of Holly's character in the original novel, such as her flirtation with bisexuality, were omitted to make the part more suitable for Audrey Hepburn.
5. George Peppard was a student of Method acting, a style Hepburn found difficult to work with. Nonetheless, the two actors remained close friends until her death.
6. The song "Moon River" was written especially for Audrey Hepburn, since she had no training as a singer. The vocals were written to be sung in only one octave.
7. At a post-production meeting following a screening of the film, a studio executive, in reference to "Moon River," said, "Well, I think the first thing we can do is get rid of that stupid song." Audrey Hepburn stood up at the table and said, "Over my dead body!" The song stayed in the picture.
8. Steve McQueen was offered the co-starring role. However, he was still under contract for the show "Wanted: Dead or Alive" (1958), which prevented him from appearing. The role eventually went to George Peppard.
9. Audrey Hepburn's salary for the film was $750,000, making her the second highest paid actress (behind Elizabeth Taylor) per film at the time.
10. The story which Paul received the $50 check for is called Roman Caper, a reference to Audrey Hepburn's first starring role, Roman Holiday (1953).
11. The famous black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the opening scenes of this movie was sold for $807,000 on December 4, 2006 at Christie's Auction House in London, making it the second most expensive piece of movie memorabilia ever sold. The first is the Best Picture Oscar for Gone with the Wind (1939).
12. Although it's never explained why Holly is wearing a bed sheet at her cocktail party, an earlier scene (cut before release) established she'd been taking a bath and had to improvise a gown on the spur of moment. The cut scene was featured in Life magazine pictorial shortly before film was released.
13. In the famous "it should take you exactly 4 seconds to cross from here to that door. I give you two" scene, it takes Paul exactly 4 seconds from when he starts walking to when he reaches the door.
14. In the film's original trailer (included on the special edition DVD), the announcer mistakenly pronounces Truman Capote's last name as "Capot", without pronouncing the "e" at the end of his name. This mistake was repeated (on purpose) on the "Mary Tyler Moore" show - Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) is demanding better writers and he says they should get "that Truman Capot fellow". Phyllis (Cloris Leachman) tries to correct him by saying just "E". Ted then says "oh yeah, Truman E. Capot".
15. Holly Golightly wears the same dress through the movie, simply changing the accessories to give each outfit a different look. Her black dress is featured at least four times.
16. The perfume Holly is spraying in the apartment hallway during her drunken scenes is Makila by Jean Patou.
17. In Truman Capote's novel Holly was a prostitute, had an abortion, liked to smoke weed, was bisexual and swore like a drunken sailor.
18. In the Book the narrator describes how Holly would wash her hair and sit out on the fire escape thumbing her guitar while waiting for her hair to dry; this is reflected during her "Moonriver" scene, which is why she has a wrap around her hair.
19. Truman Capote was reportedly unhappy with the decision to cast Audrey Hepburn as he'd been in favor of Marilyn Monroe. Hepburn was very self-conscious of her performance while Capote was on set as she felt inadequate as the Holly he had envisioned.
20. Holly Golightly is supposed to be just nineteen years old when she meets with Paul. Audrey Hepburn was thirty-one years old when playing Holly.

Tonight's Clue ~ An escort and a kept man find love when they least expect it.

Night 12 ~ Big Fish

Tagline - An adventure as big as life itself.

Directed by Tim Burton (Batman, Eward Scissorhands and Mars Attacks!) and released on January 9, 2004 by Columbia Pictures (rated PG-13). A son (Billy Crudup) tries to understand his dying father's (Albert Finney) life better as he feels he has only been told "tall tales" of his father's past. But sometimes it takes a tall tale to tell a great story.

Will returns home as his father, Edward, lays close to dying. Feeling his father has always stole the show with his "tall tales", Will tries to get his father to tell him the real story of his life. Through flashbacks we see these tall tales which tell the story of how Will's father Edward (Ewan McGregor) and mother Sandra (Allison Lohman) met and that just maybe some life stories are just too big for a small story.

This movie is a visually impressive movie. Eward's tall tales are told in a fairytale style with lots of color and imagination. While they are not meant to be completely believable stories it is heartwarming to see them tell their magic and to show their reality at the end. The story of Eward and Sandra is one of heartbreak and joy just as any great romantic story should be. The scene with Eward standing in a field of Daffodils proclaiming his love to Sandra not only visually stunning but emotionally stunning. If you are a romantic who likes a little magic in their stories you should love this one. Also, the father-son element of the movie will bring a few tears to your eyes so make sure to have the tissue box handy.

Big Fish is currently available to stream on Netflix and is available to rent or stream on most DVD services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. Ewan McGregor was cast as Young Ed Bloom when producers noticed the striking similarity between him and pictures of a young Albert Finney, who plays Senior Ed Bloom.
2. The scenes at Auburn were originally supposed to be shot on location on the campus of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, but the school officials asked for script approval and the production didn't have time to wait so they filmed the scenes at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama instead.
3. When young Edward Bloom is singing in the church and his voice breaks, that single note that we hear is actually Ewan McGregor singing.
4. French actress Marion Cotillard's first American feature film.
5. The town of Ashton, Alabama is actually Wetumpka, Alabama and Prattville, Alabama combined.
6. The author of the original book appears as Sandra's economics professor at Auburn.
7. Tim Burton appears as one of the clowns sitting close to Mr. Calloway's trailer, who flees when the wolf jumps from it.

Tonight's Clue ~ A tall tale tells the story of a great love.

Night 11 ~ One Day

Tagline - Twenty years. Two people.

Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education and The Riot Club) and released on August 19, 2011 by Focus Features (Rated PG-13). After one awkward night after graduation, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) spend the next twenty years of their lives fighting the inevitable.

One Day takes us on the journey of Emma and Dexter. Two people who meet briefly one night but end up making a lasting friendship that ultimately turns to love. It is interesting to watch a story where our character are not instantly in a relationship. Instead a story of a long lasting bond that has more than it's fair share of bumps along the way. While their story may not always be the happiest it will leave you with that great feeling that reminds you that real love does exist. Even if it might make you cry a bit in the process.

This movie is based on a novel by David Nicholls. I have not heard too many people who like the novel that are happy with the movie. This is nothing new. Though it is suppose to be a pretty faithful adaptation. I personally have never read the book and I really liked the movie.

One Day is currently available to stream on Netflix and is available to stream and rent on most DVD services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. The scene where Dex and Emma go skinny-dipping is the only scene in the film where Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess were not wearing wigs.
2. There were some conversations about why cast an American actress to play Dexter's English mother but Lone Scherfig really liked the sense of experience, worldliness and flirtatiousness that Patricia Clarkson brought to the part.
3. Dexter's father mentions Silent Witness is coming up on the television. Ken Stott, who plays Dexter's father, appeared in Silent Witness (1996).
4. Anne Hathaway was clandestinely given the script as director Lone Scherfig wasn't looking at any American actresses for the part of Emma. Hathaway flew to London for a meeting with Scherfig which she described as "the worst meeting of my life.. I was just inarticulate". However, on leaving the director, she handed her a list of songs that she felt represented how she would interpret the character. It was this list that landed her the part.

"I think I notice a lot of everyday things that people overlook from an artistic perspective and try to capture what I see. We all get busy and overwhelmed with life so sometimes it's nice to just look at a piece of nature or architecture in a different way from how your regularly experience it."

What new designs/creations would you like to add to your shop in the future?

Night 10 ~ Love Actually

Tagline - Love actually is all around.

Directed by Richard Curtis (Pirate Radio and About Time) and released on November 14, 2003 by Universal Pictures (Rated R). Christmas time in England brings love and loss to a group of people randomly connected.

Love Actually is a sweet, funny and sometimes touching romantic comedy. A large cast of mostly British actors and actresses play a randomly connected group of people all experiencing love in one shape or another. We experience love in all it's form. You will laugh and you might even get a little misty-eyed but for the most part this is a feel good movie.

Released just over a year after the attacks on 9/11, you will see the effects reflected in the speech between the Prime Minister and the US President. But you will also see it reflected in a loving way at the end of the movie in the way the airport scene is filmed. Taking the fear and tragedy that was surrounding plane travel and replacing it with the love and happiness of reuniting friends and families. I think this is one of the best elements of this movie.

Love Actually is available to rent or stream from most DVD services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. The airport greeting footage at the beginning and end of the film is real. Richard Curtis had a team of cameramen film at Heathrow airport for a week, and whenever they saw something that would fit in they asked the people involved for permission to use the footage.
2. According to Richard Curtis they had to put Emma Thompson in a "fat suit" to make her appear heavier because she is actually a very thin woman.
3. When Daniel says "We need Kate and we need Leo and we need them now", a toothpick can be seen in Daniel's left hand as he says "now". Later, Sam has a toothpick in his mouth while he and Daniel are lounging on a couch. What director Richard Curtis describes as "this toothpick business" was a result of Liam Neeson never being without a toothpick after he gave up smoking.
4. All four leading stars of Sense and Sensibility (1995), technically appear in this film, with Grant, Thompson and Rickman playing leading roles, and Kate Winslet appearing in stock footage of James Cameron's Titanic (1997).
5. The word "actually" is spoken twenty-two times by various characters in the film.
6. The video for Billy Mack's "Christmas is All Around" single is a clear reference to a series of memorable, and very popular, videos that Robert Palmer had done - "Addicted to Love", "Simply Irresistible", and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" - in which Palmer sings in a good suit, backed up by an all-female band, all dressed alike and dancing in a back-and-forth manner.
7. The school used for the Nativity concert at the end of the film is Elliott School, Putney, South West London and is where Pierce Brosnan went to school until he was fifteen.
8. In Daniel's eulogy he says that one of his wife's (joking) requests was to "bring Claudia Schiffer as my date to the funeral." Claudia Schiffer plays the mother of one of Sam's classmates who Daniel meets and develops an interest in near the end of the film.

Featured Shop ~ Minou Bazaar
Minou Bazaar is owned by Meenoo from Alexandria, Virginia. With Indian inspired vintage and handcrafted jewelry her shop is filled with beautiful colors and shapes.

Hot Pink Bollywood Chandelier Earrings

How did you choose your shop name?
"There is a famous clothing store in India called Meena Bazaar. I wanted a twist on that name using my own name, Meenoo. Minou is a cute spelling of my real name. Also, it means “kitten” in French (as I found out freshman year in high school), and as a certified cat lady, I couldn’t resist that!"

Miniature Art Pendant Necklace

Why did you choose to make/sell what you do?
"I take Indian themes and design and simplify them for the modern woman to create jewelry you can wear every day. I make jewelry for women who are curious, romantic, and have a passion for other cultures, beauty, history, mythology, and art. I love using vintage Indian bits and pieces of neglected components and findings and combining them with vintage Lucite, crystals, and gemstones to create something new. I take great care and time in choosing shapes, patterns, and colors that remind me of India and South Asia and its endless source of inspiration."

What inspires the designs/creations you make?
"I am inspired by color, nature, history, mythology, literature, and of course the shiny and sparkly. Additionally, I enjoy upcycling vintage Indian-inspired findings into new jewelry!"

Purple Jade Necklace

What new designs/creations would you like to add to your shop in the future?
"I would like to add more bracelets and more luxury necklaces and earrings for special occasions. And I would like to return to making bridal jewelry for unusual brides."

Since it's February, I asked the shops to share their favorite love story movies.
"I have two favorites: Roman Holiday and Bright Star. I love Roman Holiday because it's pretty much a perfect movie, Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, and Rome are so pretty to look at, and the story is deeper than you would think from the surface. I love Bright Star because of its absolutely beautiful setting and cinematography, and the genuine emotion you feel from the actors. Oh, and because of Keats."

Night 9 ~ An Affair To Remember

Tagline - On the Riviera...across the ocean...and all
              over New York!

Directed by Leo McCarey (Duck Soup and The Bells of Saint Mary's) and released on July 11, 1957 by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (Rated G). Playboy Nicky Ferrante (Carry Grant) and night club singer Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) have a romance while on a cruise from Europe to New York. Problem is they are both engaged to other people. They decide to make plans to meet six months later on the top floor of The Empire State Building to see if they still feel the same way about each other. Will they keep their date or will fate try to keep them apart?

This is classic movie making at it's best. Whirlwind romance, beautiful locations, unforeseen tragedy and big sappy endings. The time period is one of my favorites. The men look dapper and the women so beautiful. It's a great big slice of 50's movie magic. If you like love stories and haven't seen this one yet, go give it a try. You just don't get much better than Carry Grant!

This movie is a remake of the 1939 movie "Love Affair" with Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. There was also a modern day remake in 1994 also titled "Love Affair" with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. I have not seen either of these versions.

An Affair to Remember is currently available to stream on Netflix and Amazon Prime and is available to rent and stream on most DVD services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. References to this movie in Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle (1993), revitalized interest in the film, and led to 2 million additional sales of the 1957 classic on VHS.
2. Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant improvised many of their scenes throughout filming, and a number of lines that made it to the final cut of the film came from the actors' improvisation.
3. Ingrid Bergman was the first choice to play Terry McKay.
4. Nickie and Terry make their conditional promise to meet in six months at exactly the halfway point of the film (59-1/2 minutes into the 119-minute movie).
5. Deborah Kerr plays Terry McKay, previously played by Irene Dunne in Love Affair (1939), of which this film is a remake - both were directed by Leo McCarey. The year before this film was made, Kerr played Anna Leonowens in The King and I (1956), also a role that had previously been played by Irene Dunne in the black-and-white classic Anna and the King of Siam (1946).
6. After the confrontation with the photographer on the ship's deck, Deborah Kerr turns to Cary Grant and says, "So, I go my way [traces a straight path by her hand] and you go yours [traces a twisty path with the waive of her hand]." The same exchange takes place between Irene Dunne and Cary Grant in The Awful Truth (1937), where she says: "As we go down the life's highway, you go in your way [traces a twisty path with the waive of her hand] and I go in my way [traces a straight path]."
7. Second of three movies that paired Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant.
