Night 12 ~ Big Fish
Tagline - An adventure as big as life itself.
Directed by Tim Burton (Batman, Eward Scissorhands and Mars Attacks!) and released on January 9, 2004 by Columbia Pictures (rated PG-13). A son (Billy Crudup) tries to understand his dying father's (Albert Finney) life better as he feels he has only been told "tall tales" of his father's past. But sometimes it takes a tall tale to tell a great story.
Will returns home as his father, Edward, lays close to dying. Feeling his father has always stole the show with his "tall tales", Will tries to get his father to tell him the real story of his life. Through flashbacks we see these tall tales which tell the story of how Will's father Edward (Ewan McGregor) and mother Sandra (Allison Lohman) met and that just maybe some life stories are just too big for a small story.
This movie is a visually impressive movie. Eward's tall tales are told in a fairytale style with lots of color and imagination. While they are not meant to be completely believable stories it is heartwarming to see them tell their magic and to show their reality at the end. The story of Eward and Sandra is one of heartbreak and joy just as any great romantic story should be. The scene with Eward standing in a field of Daffodils proclaiming his love to Sandra not only visually stunning but emotionally stunning. If you are a romantic who likes a little magic in their stories you should love this one. Also, the father-son element of the movie will bring a few tears to your eyes so make sure to have the tissue box handy.
Big Fish is currently available to stream on Netflix and is available to rent or stream on most DVD services.
Take a look at the original trailer.
Some trivia about the movie.
1. Ewan McGregor was cast as Young Ed Bloom when producers noticed the striking similarity between him and pictures of a young Albert Finney, who plays Senior Ed Bloom.
2. The scenes at Auburn were originally supposed to be shot on location on the campus of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, but the school officials asked for script approval and the production didn't have time to wait so they filmed the scenes at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama instead.
3. When young Edward Bloom is singing in the church and his voice breaks, that single note that we hear is actually Ewan McGregor singing.
4. French actress Marion Cotillard's first American feature film.
5. The town of Ashton, Alabama is actually Wetumpka, Alabama and Prattville, Alabama combined.
6. The author of the original book appears as Sandra's economics professor at Auburn.
7. Tim Burton appears as one of the clowns sitting close to Mr. Calloway's trailer, who flees when the wolf jumps from it.
Love this movie!! Haven't seen it in a few years so I'll have to watch it soon
ReplyDeleteNeed to see this movie! Never heard of it but it sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this one yet!
ReplyDeleteThe visuals are gorgeous, but I didn't like it overall. There was a hackneyed subplot about the Billy Crudup character's relationship with his father, and I didn't think it was very well-written. But I hear that Tim Burton worked with some of his old screenwriters again on "Big Eyes," so I'm excited to see that.
ReplyDeleteI love this movie - so surreal and just fun to watch and see it all tie together throughout.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Tim burton fanatic (so I thought lol) but I never saw this one.
