Fear Friday ~ Not Your Average Love Story

It's Friday and this week's Fear Friday selection is the last of the Valentine themed movies. This film is a beautiful and sweet yet ultimately twisted tale of love and longing to be loved. For anyone who has felt like the odd one in the room. For anyone who has felt too shy to talk to that one special boy. And especially for all of those who like their love stories dark and creepy, this is the love story for you. This Vixen list this as one of her favorite movies. Enjoy!

Every Friday at the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog is Fear Friday. Fear Fridays are a celebration of all films spooky. Horror is a very broad genre and the Lounge loves it all. Each Friday you will find a review of a different film. These can range from Classic Horror (black and white and cheesy), Thrillers (suspense, jumps and a good mystery), outright Horror (chop chop, slash slash, die die) and anything else in between.

So pop some popcorn, kill the lights and enjoy tonight's selection. And please, share your comments on the film. Bad or good let me know what you thought of it. And now, my little ghouls and dolls, the Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog is proud to present this week's film.

Fear Friday - May

Tagline - If you can't find a friend... make one.
Be Careful... She Just Might Take Your
              Heart.

Directed by Lucky McKee (The Woods and Red) and released on June 6, 2003 by Lions Gate Films (Rated R). May (Angela Bettis) has always been "different" and has trouble finding friends. Her best friend is Suzy a creepy old doll kept inside a glass box. May tries so hard to connect with the people around her like Adam (Jeremy Sisto) the boy she likes and Polly (Anna Faris) the girl she works with. But no one seems to understand May and no one sticks around for long. As May's mother once told her "If you can't find a friend make one".

This is a wonderful movie. It's so much more than a horror film. Angela Bettis is so good in her role as May that you can't help feeling for this character. We can all see a little bit of ourselves in her. The wanting to be accepted, trying to get the attention of a certain boy, wanting someone to like you for who you are and all the other insecure feelings we all have. May just happens to be a little closer to the edge of sanity then most. It's both sad and scary to watch her slide into madness.

The look of the film and the music work well. There is some blood but it's not over the top. It's just used effectively. The scene with the blind children, Suzy and May it just hard for me to watch but wonderfully done. The best scene here will come at the very end of the last scene. The first time I saw it I was creeped out. It is so unexpected and so wrong on so many levels!!! It's subtle but very effective. You should really go check this one out.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. Director Lucky McKee has a cameo as the man with his girlfriend in the elevator, both times.
2. Originally the film opened with a lengthy introduction to May as a child. But when the film appeared to be taking too long to get to its point, most of those scenes were cut. The opening with the adult May, specifically the first scene with her and her doll, were shot quickly and only to make the point that May was lonely as quickly as possible.
3. The scene where Blank and May meet was a re-shoot. In the original scene, May was not cold and vague, but angry, and insulted people as they walked by on the street. The scene ended with the two of them in the park. That scene is still in the film but entirely replaced and reedited. It is now the scene where Adam and May meet and have their final talk in the park. The scene is told only through close ups, with both May and Adam glancing off camera. They were originally looking at Blank who was sitting beside her but he was edited out of the scene completely.
4. There is a movie called "Roman" which is directed by Angela Bettis and stars Lucky McKee. A reversal of roles.
5. The teenage girl who asks May "got any cold ones in there" is dressed up as a zombie cheerleader in the exact same costume and makeup from Lucky McKee's very first movie, _All Cheerleaders Must Die (2001) (V).
6. In the very beginning of the film we see young May with a black patch over her left eye (the right eye, from an audience perspective). Skip forward a few minutes and May is now a young woman with a "lazy" right eye (the left eye, from an audiences' perspective).
7.
When May takes a cigarette out of the Bilson box, a camel cigarette logo can be seen along the bottom part of the cigarette.

Fear Friday ~ No, It's Not A Movie About Sports.

It's Fear Friday and the Valentine themed movies continue at the Laughing Vixen Lounge blog. This week's film is a twisted tale of love and obsession gone horribly wrong. For anyone who is tired of traditional sappy sweet love stories then this one is for you. A definite Anti-Valentine's Day movie!!!

Fear Friday - Boxing Helena

Tagline - A deep, dark obsession that bares a woman's body and a man's
             soul.
Beyond love, beyond obsession, there hides something beyond
             reason.

Directed by Jennifer Chambers Lynch (Surveillance, Hiss and Chained) and released on September 3, 1993 by Mainline Pictures (Rated R). A doctor (Julian Sands) falls for a woman (Sherilyn Fenn) but she does not return his feelings. What lengths will a man go to make the woman of his dreams fall in love with him? Me thinks waaaaaay too far!!!

It has been awhile since I watched this movie, and I could not find it to watch quickly, so I will have to go on what I remember. This is one of those odd movies to say the least. Boy meets girl, girl does not like boy back, boy is obsessive and has to have girl, girl has nasty accident and boy sees his opportunity to have girl. It's wrong on so many levels but does make for an interesting watch. This is definitely more of a drama and not much of any gore that I can remember. The horror comes from the very twisted obsession the doctor forms with Helena and the lengths he is willing to go to make her fall in love with him. I do not want to give away anything in case you do not know the gist of the movie.

Another reason to give this a watch is the great cast. Julian Sands (A Room With A View, Naked Lunch and Warlock), Sherylin Fenn (of Twin Peaks fame), Kurtwood Smith (so many movies but a favorite in That 70's Show) and of course my personal favorite Bill Paxton (Weird Science, Aliens, Indian Summer and more recently Big Love on HBO). Anything with Mr. Paxton in it is worth the price of admission in my book! Especially his early roles.

Take a look at the original trailer. ***If you really do not want to know anything about what happens to her do not watch past the 1:20 mark as it does give you some idea***

Some trivia about the movie.
1. The composition of the movie's promotional poster is a recreation of figure artist Ruth Bernhard's 1962 photograph, "In the Box (Horizontal)." The original is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
2. Kim Basinger pulled out of the title role, and was successfully sued for $9 million for violation of a verbal contract. The award was overturned on appeal, and the case was settled out of court.
3. Filmed in Atlanta attorney Ed Garland's 15,000 square foot mansion. The house also was used for portions of Driving Miss Daisy (1989).
4. Jennifer Chambers Lynch wrote the screenplay when she was 19 years old.
5. Madonna was originally going to play the lead. At that time, the project was titled "Boxing Hanna."
6. Ed Harris and John Malkovich were offered the lead role of Dr. Nick Cavanaugh. The role eventually went to Julian Sands.

Fear Friday ~ You Better Be Nice To The Geeky Kid.

It's Fear Friday here at the Laughing Vixen Lounge blog. Since it is February all of the films will have a Valentine theme to them. This week comes a traditional slasher film that teaches us the lesson "don't pick on the geeky kid" or some Valentine's Day you all might start to die.

Fear Friday - Valentine

Tagline - Scared to be alone on Valentine's Day? You should be.
Remember that kid everyone ignored on Valentine's Day? He
              remembers you.
              Love Hurts.

Directed by Jamie Blanks (Urban Legends and The Long Weekend) and released on February 2, 2001 by Warner Brothers (Rated R). When a group of friends start to die off they begin to suspect a former classmate that they wronged. Could it be him or is it someone much closer? Muahahahaha!!!

This is a fun little slasher movie. It's your basic chop chop slash slash film with a Valentine's Day theme. A group of girls embarrassed a boy in school. Flash forward to their twenties. It's Valentine's Day and the group starts to die off one by one. While this is nothing new story wise I still found it to be an interesting watch. They do a pretty good job at making you think the killer is one person, then another and so on.

Not that any movie with Denise Richards in it would be high on my list but hey, most people do not last very long in these movies! If you are looking for something bloody this Valentine's Day instead of sappy this is a good choice. Pair it up with My Bloody Valentine and you will have yourself a great anti Valentine's Day double feature.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. In one scene, Kat tells Dorothy that her boyfriend, Adam Carr (David Boreanaz), is 'no angel'. This is, of course, referring to Boreanaz's hit TV series, Angel (1999).
2. During the original casting process, Tara Reid played "Dorothy Wheeler' (now played by Jessica Capshaw) and Jennifer Love Hewitt played "Paige Prescott" (now played by Denise Richards).
3. Shot in 42 days.
4. At a cost of $10 million this is the cheapest film to ever have a Superbowl spot.
5. Luke Wilson and Jeremy Sisto were considered for the role of Adam Carr.

Through the whole giveaway you have seen some of my favorite love story movies. So for my shop feature I am going with a new title that is opening today in theaters here in the US. Winter's Tale looks to be a great romantic movie. It has a bit of fantasy to it and lots of romantic goodness. It's built on the "love spans all time" theme. You may as well just stamp the word "sucker" on my forehead as I have no resistance to a good romantic tale. It starts off back in time where everyone is dressed so dapper. And there's dancing and sappy, swooning dialouge of love. A cute boy who travels over time for the one great love of his life. Oh my, why fight it? I'll be there with money in hand and tissue in pocket!

Take a look at the trailer.

Night 14 ~ Say Anything

Tagline - To know Lloyd Dobler is to love him.
Diane Court is about to know Lloyd
                Dobler.
She's got every thing going for her.
He's going for her with every thing he's got.
                A Lloyd meets girl story

Songs from movie playing on the jukebox...
*In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel

Directed by Cameron Crow (Almost Famous) on released on April 14, 1989 by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (Rated PG-13). Lloyd (John Cusack) and Diane (Ione Skye) fall in love the summer after graduation. When Diane gets a scholarship to study in England she has a choice to make. Listen to her father and dump Lloyd or listen to her heart and stay?

I love this movie. It doesn't get much better than this. This movie came out the same year I graduated from High School and it was Seattle before it was trendy to set everything in Seattle. Lloyd is charming and sweet. Diane is beautiful and warm. The movie is funny, sweet and even a little heart breaking. It is love at it's most simple and "basic". Ha!

Best line - "I gave her my heart and she gave me a... pen." - Lloyd

Go watch it now!!!

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie...
1. The Smithereens were commissioned by Cameron Crowe to write the theme song for the movie, and they came up with "A Girl Like You". Crowe thought that the lyrics were too leading (they outline the entire plot), so he rejected it in favor of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". "A Girl Like You" went on to be included in The Smithereens' next album, "11", and in the movie Backdraft (1991) by Ron Howard.
2. Director Cameron Crowe couldn't find the love song he wanted until he heard Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". Gabriel asked to see part of the movie. Crowe had the production company send him an unfinished cut. Gabriel responded by saying he would let them use the song, as he liked the film. He was, however, wary about the part where the lead character overdosed at the end. It was then that Crowe realized that Gabriel had been sent a copy of Wired (1989) instead.
3. When Lloyd (John Cusack) drives along 45th street in Seattle, he passes the Guild 45th Theatre, which is showing Tapeheads (1988), in which Cusack also appeared.
4. Kirk Cameron was nearly cast as Lloyd instead of John Cusack.
5. John Cusack's kick boxing scenes in the ring, including the one where his nose is broken, are done with Don 'The Dragon' Wilson who is a real-life kick boxing champion.
6. Robert Downey Jr. turned down the lead played by John Cusack.
7. Christian Slater auditioned for the role of Lloyd Dobbler but director Cameron Crowe was adamant about getting John Cusack. Also, there was a tie between Ione Skye and actress Jennifer Connelly for the role of Diane Court.
8. Director Cameo: [Cameron Crowe] and wife Nancy Wilson as pedestrians in front of the mall as Lloyd passes by while recalling the site of their first "date".
9. The dojo featured in this movie is the same one that was used in The Karate Kid (1984) as the Cobra Kai dojo.
10. When Lloyd holds up the radio, it is actually playing a song by the group Fishbone. "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel was added post-production.
11. Lloyd makes several references in the movie to "Bell Square" mall, short for Bellevue Square (located in Bellevue, Washington). When Lloyd is driving in the rain and sees the mall, he is actually driving by Westlake Center (located in downtown Seattle).
12. Producer James L. Brooks said what inspired this movie was an incident where Brooks saw a man walking with his daughter. He saw them and wondered what would happen if the father committed a crime. Those thoughts were used to create the story.
13. The original Australian VHS release through CBS Fox features an early Simpsons short.
14. John Cusack put a scar on his right eyebrow for Lloyd's character. He says that the story behind that is that someone threw a rock at Lloyd when he was a kid.
15. The movie's line "I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen." was voted as the #73 of "The 100 Greatest Movie Lines" by Premiere in 2007.
16. Bebe Neuwirth's film debut.
17. Lloyd and Diane's school appears to be based on The Lakeside School, which is a very prestigious Seattle private school. In the movie, the school is called "Lakewood" (and has a rooster mascot, rather than a lion), but in Lloyd's first phone conversation with Diane, John Cusack mentions that at his annual party, Lloyd "dresses up as the Lakeside rooster."
18. Ione Skye once dated Anthony Kiedis, lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose song "Taste the Pain" opens the movie.

"One of my favorite movie love stories is The Notebook, written by Nicolas Sparks. It is about an older man (James Garner) who goes every day to visit and read to an older lady (Gena Rowlands) who lives in a dementia care facility. He is reading her a story from a notebook about a young couple who love each other but are kept apart for a long time by the girl's parents. One day the lady's mind is clear and she realizes the story that he has been reading is about them and that (James Garner) is really her husband. The movie ends with him laying in bed with her one night and they both pass away within hours of each other while they are holding hands."

Night 13 ~ An Affair To Remember

Tagline - On the Riviera...across the ocean...and all
              over New York!

Songs from the movie playing on the Jukebox...
*An Affair To Remember by Vic Damone

Directed by Leo McCarey (Duck Soup and The Bells of Saint Mary's) and released on July 11, 1957 by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (Rated G). Playboy Nicky Ferrante (Carry Grant) and night club singer Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) have a romance while on a cruise from Europe to New York. Problem is they are both engaged to other people. They decide to make plans to meet six months later on the top floor of The Empire State Building to see if they still feel the same way about each other. Will they keep their date or will fate try to keep them apart?

This is classic movie making at it's best. Whirlwind romance, beautiful locations, unforeseen tragedy and big sappy endings. The time period is one of my favorites. The men look dapper and the women so beautiful. It's a great big slice of 50's movie magic. If you like love stories and haven't seen this one yet, go give it a try. You just don't get much better than Carry Grant!

This movie is a remake of the 1939 movie "Love Affair" with Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. There was also a modern day remake in 1994 also titled "Love Affair" with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. I have not seen either of these versions.

Take a look at the original trailer

Some trivia about the movie...
1. References to this movie in Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle (1993), revitalized interest in the film, and led to 2 million additional sales of the 1957 classic on VHS.
2. Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant improvised many of their scenes throughout filming, and a number of lines that made it to the final cut of the film came from the actors' improvisation.
3. Ingrid Bergman was the first choice to play Terry McKay.
4. Nickie and Terry make their conditional promise to meet in six months at exactly the halfway point of the film (59-1/2 minutes into the 119-minute movie).
5. Deborah Kerr plays Terry McKay, previously played by Irene Dunne in Love Affair (1939), of which this film is a remake - both were directed by Leo McCarey. The year before this film was made, Kerr played Anna Leonowens in The King and I (1956), also a role that had previously been played by Irene Dunne in the black-and-white classic Anna and the King of Siam (1946).
6. After the confrontation with the photographer on the ship's deck, Deborah Kerr turns to Cary Grant and says, "So, I go my way [traces a straight path by her hand] and you go yours [traces a twisty path with the waive of her hand]." The same exchange takes place between Irene Dunne and Cary Grant in The Awful Truth (1937), where she says: "As we go down the life's highway, you go in your way [traces a twisty path with the waive of her hand] and I go in my way [traces a straight path]."
7. Second of three movies that paired Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant.

Featured Shop ~ The Howling Boutique
The Howling Boutique is run by Mardi from North Richland Hills, TX. Her shop features jewelry made with sparkling nail polish.

Ruby Red Heart Earrings

How did you choose your shop name?
"I LOVE wolves. Aside from Rihanna and My Little Ponies, they are one of my favorite "things" ever! They are beautiful, magnificent creatures that are extremely misunderstood and madly stereotyped. I love the way each pack has a place for each family member, how the alpha and his female mate for life, how wolves will adopt and raise puppies not even born of their pack.. I could go on and on, but I won't! Haha! So I wanted to include something wolf-y in my shop name. The first name I wanted was, sadly, already taken (so says Google) but my second choice wasn't! So, The Howling Boutique it was."

Teal Glass Earrings

Why did you choose to make/sell what you do?
"I've been making jewelry for over nine years - mainly for myself or as gifts for friends and family. I started making my own accessories due to the frustration of rarely being able to find what size / color / shape / combination / etc. I wanted and I soon discovered that making my own was not only cheaper, but very therapeutic for me (I'm currently on disability). My hope is that other people who are frustrated at the lack of originality and selection out there will be able to find what they want in my store - something truly one of a kind."

Bright Orange Glitter Polish Ring

What inspires the designs/creations you make?
"Oh, various things, really. A lot of the glitter color combinations I've come up with as far as the different shades of certain colors, etc. are inspired by my collection of My Little Ponies. So many colors and combinations of colors!"

Blue Glass Pendant

What new designs/creations would you like to add to your shop in the future?
"I JUST started selling heart and oval earrings and will soon also offer circle and square earrings. Later this year I also hope to start selling some of the nail polish I make and use in my pendants :) Aside from the painted glass jewelry, I plan on also offering other jewelry such as stud earrings, beaded bracelets & necklaces, dangle / drop earrings, and rings."

Since it's February, I asked the shops to share their favorite love story movies.
"I honestly don't really like Love Stories or Romantic Comedies.. LOL! Give me some Horror or Suspense or Action! BUT. I really did enjoy the movie He's Just Not That Into You and Love, Actually. Those two seem to be the only two movies stuffed with A-List actors that were any good at all (sorry but all the other ones I have NOT enjoyed). HJNTIY had Scarlett Johansson, first of all, who I LOVE, plus Jennifer Connolly and Bradley Cooper! Yum. I thought it was both funny and pretty accurate. Love, Actually was really amazing but I can't watch it anymore because the part with Keira Knightly and the signs (you know which part I mean if you've seen it) makes me cry!"

Night 12 ~ Breakfast At Tiffany's

Tagline ~ Audrey Hepburn plays that daring, darling Holly Golightly to a
              new high in entertainment delight!

Songs from the movie playing on the Jukebox...
 *Moon River by Audrey Hepburn.

Based on a novel by Truman Capote and directed by Blake Edwards (The Great Race, The Pink Panther and 10) and released on October 5, 1961 by Paramount Pictures. A young writer Paul (George Peppard) meets Holly (Audrey Hepburn) his quirky neighbor. It doesn't take long before Paul is in love with Holly, like most everyone who meets her. But can Holly return his love or is she looking for something bigger?

This is a classic and for good reason. Audrey Hepburn plays the slightly scattered but completely lovable Holly, an escort longing for love but afraid to have it. George Peppard is the struggling writer and kept man Paul, who has just moved in upstairs. The movie plays on the themes of loss, sadness and loneliness but ultimately love and learning to trust.

While the film does have heavier moments it also have humor and is a gorgeous example of the late 50's/early 60's in film. Audrey is wonderful to watch in her fabulous fashions and bohemian lifestyle. New York makes a beautiful backdrop for this slice of nostalgia. It is also a great throwback to a time were drinking was a very glamorous pass time. My stars, do these people drink!

While I have not read the Truman Capote novel this was based on I know it varies greatly. So greatly that Mr. Capote was far from happy with it. I can imagine as it was loosely based on his own life with the character Paul created around himself. But if you have not read the book, or can separate the two, this is a movie gem that is well worth a watch.

Breakfast At Tiffany's is currently available on Netflix and Netflix streaming.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. Audrey Hepburn said the scene where she throws Cat into the rainy street was the most distasteful thing she ever had to do on film.
2. Audrey Hepburn hated Danish pastries, making filming the famous opening scene a bit of a chore for her.
3. Although not visible on camera, hundreds of onlookers watched Audrey Hepburn's window-shopping scene at the start of the film. This made her nervous and she kept making mistakes. It wasn't until a crew member nearly got electrocuted behind the camera that she pulled herself together and finished the scene.
4. Elements of Holly's character in the original novel, such as her flirtation with bisexuality, were omitted to make the part more suitable for Audrey Hepburn.
5. George Peppard was a student of Method acting, a style Hepburn found difficult to work with. Nonetheless, the two actors remained close friends until her death.
6. The song "Moon River" was written especially for Audrey Hepburn, since she had no training as a singer. The vocals were written to be sung in only one octave.
7. At a post-production meeting following a screening of the film, a studio executive, in reference to "Moon River," said, "Well, I think the first thing we can do is get rid of that stupid song." Audrey Hepburn stood up at the table and said, "Over my dead body!" The song stayed in the picture.
8. Steve McQueen was offered the co-starring role. However, he was still under contract for the show "Wanted: Dead or Alive" (1958), which prevented him from appearing. The role eventually went to George Peppard.
9. Audrey Hepburn's salary for the film was $750,000, making her the second highest paid actress (behind Elizabeth Taylor) per film at the time.
10. The story which Paul received the $50 check for is called Roman Caper, a reference to Audrey Hepburn's first starring role, Roman Holiday (1953).
11. The famous black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the opening scenes of this movie was sold for $807,000 on December 4, 2006 at Christie's Auction House in London, making it the second most expensive piece of movie memorabilia ever sold. The first is the Best Picture Oscar for Gone with the Wind (1939).
12. Although it's never explained why Holly is wearing a bed sheet at her cocktail party, an earlier scene (cut before release) established she'd been taking a bath and had to improvise a gown on the spur of moment. The cut scene was featured in Life magazine pictorial shortly before film was released.
13. In the famous "it should take you exactly 4 seconds to cross from here to that door. I give you two" scene, it takes Paul exactly 4 seconds from when he starts walking to when he reaches the door.
14. In the film's original trailer (included on the special edition DVD), the announcer mistakenly pronounces Truman Capote's last name as "Capot", without pronouncing the "e" at the end of his name. This mistake was repeated (on purpose) on the "Mary Tyler Moore" show - Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) is demanding better writers and he says they should get "that Truman Capot fellow". Phyllis (Cloris Leachman) tries to correct him by saying just "E". Ted then says "oh yeah, Truman E. Capot".
15. Holly Golightly wears the same dress through the movie, simply changing the accessories to give each outfit a different look. Her black dress is featured at least four times.
16. The perfume Holly is spraying in the apartment hallway during her drunken scenes is Makila by Jean Patou.
17. In Truman Capote's novel Holly was a prostitute, had an abortion, liked to smoke weed, was bisexual and swore like a drunken sailor.
18. In the Book the narrator describes how Holly would wash her hair and sit out on the fire escape thumbing her guitar while waiting for her hair to dry; this is reflected during her "Moonriver" scene, which is why she has a wrap around her hair.
19. Truman Capote was reportedly unhappy with the decision to cast Audrey Hepburn as he'd been in favor of Marilyn Monroe. Hepburn was very self-conscious of her performance while Capote was on set as she felt inadequate as the Holly he had envisioned.
20. Holly Golightly is supposed to be just nineteen years old when she meets with Paul. Audrey Hepburn was thirty-one years old when playing Holly.
