Today's Trivia Question ~
Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer was a TV special released in 1964. 15 years before that, in 1949, it was a #1 hit song for Gene Autry. But Rudolph was originally created in 1939 by a major department store as a coloring book to be given away at Christmas time. Which department store was it?

Yesterday's Question ~  In the original 1960's animated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, which classic actor was the voice for the Grinch?
Answer ~ The great Boris Karloff. Known for his roles in the classic Universal Studio's "Frankenstein" and "The Mummy".

Featured Shop - Miss Bohemia/Bohemia's Looking Glass
Miss Bohemia and Bohemia's Looking Glass are run by Jen from the UK. Miss Bohemia is filled with bohemian glamour, darkly romantic pieces, vintage inspirations and fairytales! Bohemia's Looking Glass is filled with literary themed jewelry.

Mr Darcy's Proposal Literary Scarf

How did you choose your shop name?
"Miss Bohemia originated from the word ‘bohemian’. I was drawn to this word as it is a term taken to mean 'free of rules' and unconventional! This seemed perfect for both me and my creations, which are often seen as an eclectic mix of styles which fuses everything from dark fairytales to Victorian and vintage inspired creations."

Why did you choose to make/sell what you do?
"Stemming back from childhood I have always been creative through arts and crafts. Fast forward a few years (or maybe a lot more years) and I began making jewellery and fell in love with art again while reconnecting with my creative self. The result of which became ‘Miss Bohemia’, where I have an online website and Etsy shops. Creating is one of my main passions and seeing my designs come to life is an amazing feeling."

Pride & Prejudice Love Heart Mirror, I'd Rather Be At Pemberley

What inspires the designs/creations you make?
"I tend to draw inspiration from everywhere and believe that beauty and magic can be captured from almost everything. I like to combine a mix of modern and vintage elements in my work and this probably developed from my love of art, costumes and jewellery from different eras. I also love reading and my choices vary from fairytales to thrillers and I love books that are able to fuse these elements together. You will see this spill over into my work in the form of gothic designs, the Phantom of the Opera Jewellery, literary classics and Alice In Wonderland Collection."

What new designs/creations would you like to add to your shop in the future?
"As someone with a great love of books and nostalgia, a dream of mine was to incorporate novels and vintage papers into some of my designs. This is now becoming reality as I recently added collections inspired by Wuthering Heights and Jane Austen, which include book styled gifts and accessories as well as jewellery made from recycled damaged books. I would also like to add more fabric based designs and am currently experimenting with screen-printing."

Since it's Christmas, I asked the shops to share their favorite holiday movie.
"I love being at home and watching movies at Christmas. I watch a lot of the old classics and have mentioned Miracle on 34th Street before but also wanted to mention ‘Edward Scissorhands’ too. The mix of a dark fairy tale, fantasy and romance makes Edward Scissorhand one of my favourite films. I love the gothic architecture and the hauntingly sad beauty of both Edward and the soundtrack. Although I found the ending quite sad, the falling snow and ice sculptures always make me feel Christmassy!"

For a little holiday fun, I asked the shops to share with us some of their favorite recipes and craft how to's.

Festive Salt Dough Decorations

These decorations are made from basic ingredients and easy to make!

Ingredients ~
2 cups of Plain Flour
1 cup of table salt
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Decorations ~
Acrylic paints
Glitter
Ribbon
Mod podge (optional)
Embellishments (optional)
Cotton wool (optional)

Method ~
Preheat oven to 120°C.

Add the flour and salt and then the oil to a mixing bowl and gradually add the water, mixing with a wooden spoon to form a soft dough.

Sprinkle a little flour on the work surface and knead dough for 10 minutes into a smooth ball. Leave for 10 to 20 minutes.

Roll out dough (approx 0.5 to 1 cm high) and use Christmas cutters to make festive shapes or cut out circular shapes etc. Make a small hole near the top (so you can feed the hanging ribbon through later on) with the tip of a chopstick or similar object.

Line a tray with baking paper and transfer the decorations to the tray and bake until dry and firm (usually takes around 3 to 4 hours at 120°C (Gas Mark ¼).
Leave to cool.

Add a layer of acrylic paint and allow to dry. Add a second coat and sprinkle glitter on top. I usually add a layer of mod podge and then add the glitter and gems to the decorations. For Santa's hat I added some cotton wool! Feed ribbons through holes and voila they're ready to hang or display!

  2. I love Jen's designs and am so happy to learn more about her! I always wondered about her name. I love Edward Scissorhands, too. She is having a beautiful giveaway, I love what she is offering. Seeing her recipe for homemade christmas ornaments is a great idea, I remember having them as a child. My mother must have made the dough, I'm so happy to have this recipe so I can do the same with my son since Mom is sadly now gone. Thanks Jen!
