Night 6 - Truly, Madly, Deeply

Tagline - A romantic comedy about finding love when
               it's least expected!

Music selections from the movie on the jukebox...
1. The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore - Walker Brothers

Directed by Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain) and released on May 24, 1991 by The Samuel Goldwyn Company (rated PG). Nina (Juliet Stevenson) is heartbroken after the death of Jamie (Alan Rickman), the love of her life. That is until he returns. Nina is happy having Jamie back even if it is in his "after life" form. But how long can she hold on to her past before she has to let go?

I saw this movie when it played in a little theater back in '91 and it became an instant favorite. It's a little British movie that's sweet, romantic, funny and heartbreaking. As anyone who's lost someone, the idea of them being able to come back is a lovely thought. This movie handles the transition of moving on without them here gracefully, beautifully and with a bit of humor.

Alan Rickman is wonderful in this. If you haven't seen it, and like a good romantic movie, give it a try. It's well worth it.

Take a look at the original trailer...

Some trivia about the movie...
1. Alan Rickman had cello lessons, and handles the right (bowing) hand, but the left hand is provided by a real cellist standing behind him with his arm through Alan Rickman's armpit. Juliet Stevenson does play her piano part however.
2. The Charles Chaplin film the ghosts are watching that gets cut off is Easy Street.
3. Anthony Minghella wrote the film specifically for actress Juliet Stevenson.
4. The poem Jamie asks Nina to translate is "The Dead Woman" by Pablo Neruda.

The 14 Nights of Valentine's Day Shop Feature - Miss Bohemia

Miss Bohemia is run by Jen from the UK. Her shop is filled with bohemian glamour, darkly romantic pieces, vintage inspirations and fairytales!

Jen uses vintage themes in her work. You'll see lots of pearls, soft colors and antique images. Then on the flip side you'll find pieces in dark moody shades and themes of wolves and Vampires.

Jen also has a great collection of Alice in Wonderland themed pieces that include necklaces, bracelets, earrings and keyrings. If you're a fan of the book, or know someone who is, you're sure to find something special here.

You'll have a chance to win your choice of Victorian Sweetheart or Valentine Vampire jewelry set from Jen's shop. Enter now on the main giveaway page.

Take a minute to stop by Miss Bohemia and find yourself a little treat.

To get in the Valentine spirit each shop was asked what their favorite love story movie is. Jen said "My movie pick in honour of Valentine's Day is 'While You Were Sleeping' with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. I chose this movie over some of my other favourite classic romance movies because it offers a more modern day untraditional fairytale story and has a comedic element to it too. The mix of sweet, sad and funny moments in this movie make it a perfect choice"

Now for tonight's movie. Make sure to leave a comment below. Anyone who leaves a comment, with their opinion of the movie, for each of the 14 movies will get an extra 10 entries in our Valentine's Day Giveaway. After you finish commenting on all 14 movies you need only leave 1 comment on the main giveaway page that says "I made it through the 14 Nights of Valentine's Day Movie Marathon with my heart intact!" That 1 comment will count for 10 entries.

Night 5 - Moulin Rouge

Tagline - This story is about truth. This story is
about beauty. This story is about freedom.
Above all this story is about love.

Music selections from the movie on the jukebox...
1.Sparkling Diamonds
2. Elephant Love Melody
3. Complainte de la Butte
4. Your Song
5. Come What May
6. Lady Marmalade
7. One Day I'll Fly Away
8. El Tango de Roxanne

Directed by Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet and Australia) and released on June 1, 2001 by Twentieth Century Fox (rated PG-13). Paris 1899. Christian (Ewan McGregor) has come to Paris a penniless poet. There he meets Satine (Nicole Kidman) a beautiful courtesan working at The Moulin Rouge. The two fall in love against all odds but can it survive?

This movie is beautiful! It’s full of vivid colors and gorgeous outfits. At first I was not sure I would care for the mix of modern music since the movie is set back in time but it was quickly clear that it would work brilliantly. I already knew Ewan McGregor could sing but was surprised at how well Nicole Kidman did. Musicals have never been my favorite genre but every now and then a really good one comes along and this is one of them.

And, for all of us hopeless romantics out there, this one has all the classic elements and enough tears to put a dent in the Kleenex box. So curl up on the couch and enjoy the beauty of tragic love.

Take a look at the original trailer...

Some trivia about the movie...
1. The necklace worn by Nicole Kidman was made of real diamonds and platinum and was the most expensive piece of jewelry ever made for a film. The Stefano Canturi necklace was made with 1,308 diamonds and weighed a total of 134 carats. It’s worth is an estimated $1 million dollars.
2. "Come What May" is the only completely original song in the movie. It was originally written for "Romeo + Juliet".
3. Originally, the green fairy was going to be a long-haired muscle man with a giant sitar and Ozzy Osbourne was hired to provide the vocals. Eventually it was changed to the current "Tinker Bell" incarnation, played by Kylie Minogue, but Osbourne still gives voice to the fairy's guttural scream when it turns evil.
4. Cat Stevens would not license his song "Father and Son", which was the first musical number in the original script, because of his current religious beliefs. He objected to the sexual content in the film. The scene featuring "Father and Son" was to have been between Christian and his father in his father's office, with all his father's employees joining in for the chorus. This was to be the segue into his leaving home for Paris. The scene is included in the complete script on the Special Edition DVD
5. The word "love" and its variations (loved, loves, loving, lover and lovers) appears in this film 143 times.
6. Moulin Rouge (Red Mill) dancers really wore split knickers under their dresses, a technical point that the film-makers chose not to follow in order to obtain a PG-13 rating. An enormous elephant statue in the garden, bought from a theme park, housed an Arabic nightclub and an opium den. Several images (i.e. clowns, men in tuxedos with tutus) are taken from Toulouse-Lautrec's paintings of the Moulin Rouge and nearby clubs. Some of Lautrec's lines in the scene after Satine rejects Christian are taken from his letters.

Now for tonight's movie. Make sure to leave a comment below. Night 4 - An Affair To Remember

Tagline - On the Riviera...across the ocean...and all
               over New York!

Music selections from the movie on the jukebox -
1. An Affair To Remember by Vic Damone

Directed by Leo McCarey (Duck Soup and The Bells of Saint Mary's) and released on July 11, 1957 by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. Playboy Nicky Ferrante (Carry Grant) and night club singer Terry McKay ( Deborah Kerr) have a romance while on a cruise from Europe to New York. Problem is they are both engaged to other people. They decide to make plans to meet six months later on the top floor of The Empire State Building to see if they still feel the same way about each other. Will they keep their date or will fate try to keep them apart?

This is classic movie making at it's best. Whirlwind romance, beautiful locations, unforeseen tragedy and big sappy endings. The time period is one of my favorites. The men look dapper and the women so beautiful. It's a great big slice of 50's movie magic. If you like love stories and haven't seen this one yet, go give it a try.

Take a look at the original trailer...

Some trivia about the movie...
1. References to this movie in Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle (1993), revitalized interest in the film, and led to 2 million additional sales of the 1957 classic on VHS.
2. Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant improvised many of their scenes throughout filming, and a number of lines that made it to the final cut of the film came from the actors' improvisation.
3. Ingrid Bergman was the first choice to play Terry McKay.
4. Nickie and Terry make their conditional promise to meet in six months at exactly the halfway point of the film (59-1/2 minutes into the 119-minute movie).
5. Deborah Kerr plays Terry McKay, previously played by Irene Dunne in Love Affair (1939), of which this film is a remake - both were directed by Leo McCarey. The year before this film was made, Kerr played Anna Leonowens in The King and I (1956), also a role that had previously been played by Irene Dunne in the black-and-white classic Anna and the King of Siam (1946).
6. After the confrontation with the photographer on the ship's deck, Deborah Kerr turns to Cary Grant and says, "So, I go my way [traces a straight path by her hand] and you go yours [traces a twisty path with the waive of her hand]." The same exchange takes place between Irene Dunne and Cary Grant in The Awful Truth (1937), where she says: "As we go down the life's highway, you go in your way [traces a twisty path with the waive of her hand] and I go in my way [traces a straight path]."
7. Second of three movies that paired Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant.

To get in the Valentine spirit each shop was asked what their favorite love story movie is. Teresa said " A Lot Like Love is my favorite romantic comedy movie. It is a wonderful “feel good” movie staring Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet. Both of them are so easy on the eyes."

"My Dad went out of town for the weekend, and my Mom didn’t want to stay in their big house by herself so she made the half mile drive to our condo to stay with me and my 15 year old son for a sleepover party….Yea!! We chose A Lot Like Love and enjoyed it so much. Not only did we get to see Ashton Kutcher naked in the moonlight, we had the pleasure of hearing him try to win over his love by singing Bon Jovi’s, “I’ll Be There For You,” He won my heart. Now I can’t tell you anymore about the movie, because it will ruin it. I will just say if you are a romantic, you will enjoy this movie!"

Night 2 - Dangerous Liaisons

Tagline - Lust. Seduction. Revenge. The Game As
You've Never Seen It Played Before.

Music selections from the movie on the jukebox -
My downloading site is down so I didn't get this one in time. Opps!

Directed by Stephen Frears (The Grifters and The Queen) and released on December 20, 1988 by Warner Brothers Pictures (rated R). Two aristocrats, with too much time on their hands, make a bet, act simply wicked, ruin peoples lives and ultimately become their own demise.

I really enjoy this movie. It's a mean, wicked and cruel movie but it's done so well that it becomes a sinfully good watch. Glen Close and John Malkovich are at the top of their game and such fun to watch. The costumes and settings are beautiful. Filling in the supporting cast is Michelle Pfeiffer, Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it and if you have go watch it again!

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie...
1. When the novel "Les Liaisons dangereuses" by Choderlos de Laclos was first published in 1782, it was considered so scandalous that when Queen Marie-Antoinette commissioned a copy for her personal library she had to have it bound in a blank cover so that no-one would recognise the author's name or title
2. The young Drew Barrymore was tested for and came close to getting the role of Cécile.
3. Alan Rickman, who played Vicomte de Valmont
4. The original Broadway production of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by Christopher Hampton opened at the Music Box Theater in New York on August 30, 1987, ran for 149 performances and was nominated for the 1987 Tony Award (New York City) for the Best Play.
5. Sarah Jessica Parker was originally offered the role of Cécile but turned it down.

2 - SPEECHLESS: Geena Davis & Michael Keaton. An all-time fav; just lighthearted & fun even though it takes place during a political race, lol. Wonderfully fun movie I can watch over & over; Keaton is fantastic.
3 - FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: A classic, isn't it? Haha. If not, it should be."

Night 1 - Raintree Country

Tagline - In The Great Tradition Of Civil War
               Romance.

Music selections from the movie on the jukebox -
The title song for Raintree county was a great little song sung by Nat King Cole. Unfortunately I could not find it to download anywhere. But if you're curious you can listen to it on YouTube...

Directed by Edward Dmytryk (The Caine Mutiny and Murder, My Sweet) and released on December 20, 1957 by MGM Studios. When northerner John Shawnessy (Montgomery Clift) falls for southern belle Susanna Drake (Elizabeth Taylor) the idyllic world he knows in Raintree County is changed forever. With the Civil War looming on the horizon, dark secrets about Susanna's past coming to the surface, and the former love who still waits for him, John struggles to hold on to the ideal happiness him dreamed of when he was young.

When I was putting together the movie list for the giveaway I asked my mom if she wanted to pick one. This is her choice. Neither of us had seen it in a long time, actually I don't think I had ever seen it all, so we sat down and watched it.

It took a bit to get going but once it did I quite enjoyed it. It is from the late 50's and set in the late 1800's so it's definitely a period piece. With the Civil War as a distant back drop there is much emphasis on the differences between the North and South, slavery and what's considered proper society. Elizabeth Taylor's Susanna is full of deep dark mystery and a little bit disturbed which makes her interesting to watch. Everyone is dressed in lovely outfits and the movie is filmed very beautifully.

So if you like Civil War period dramas or just classic movies give this one a try. It may not be Gone With The Wind but it is worth a watch. Besides Liz is just beautiful as always and Montgomery Clift makes a handsome leading man.

Take a look at the original trailer. It does have some minor spoilers in it.

Some trivia about the movie...
1. At the time of its release, it held the honor of being the most expensive film ever made.
2. Montgomery Clift was in a near fatal auto accident after the start of filming. The accident left his face altered and started his life in a downward spiral until his death at 45 in 1966. The brief scenes which Clift filmed just before his accident are the only color footage in films available of him before the accident. All of his previous movies had been shot in black and white.
3. The town of Freehaven of the mythical Raintree County was created in 1956 on MGM's vast Backlot #3 at Jefferson and Overland Boulevards in Culver City, California, by re-designing a portion of an old western set and adding some new buildings such as the Freehaven Town Hall and its clock tower. In 1971, MGM's Lot #3 was demolished to make way for a new apartment and condominium complex which became known as "Raintree Estates," named for this motion picture. Several Chinese Golden Raintrees were planted around the new residential property and many of the complex's streets and buildings were named for various MGM productions.

Wayback Wednesday - Who was your first?

So today I present you with the question "Who was your first concert experience?". Were you lucky enough to have seen someone who's still cool or are you like most of us who have to cringe a bit before we answer? Leave a comment below and share with us that great moment in time.

This Vixen's first was The Power Station in August of 1985. I was 14 and a huge Duran Duran fan and this was as close to them as you could get at the time. The band was originally made up of John and Andy Taylor from DD and Robert Palmer. Though for the tour Mr. Palmer was replaced with Michael Des Barres. Their hit songs were a cover of T Rex's "Bang A Gong" and "Some Like It Hot". The opening band was OMD (Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark) who's big song was "If You Leave" from Pretty in Pink fame.
