Attack of the 31 Nights of Halloween GIANT Giveaway Shop Feature - Sweet Sensations and Calaveras Y Diablitos

Our first shop is Sweet Sensations run by Katie from Kennewick, WA. Her shop is filled with yummy looking bath and body treats and candles.

Bath Bombs

So where does the name Sweet Sensations come from? Katie says "I had been thinking of fun names for a while and Sweet Sensations I loved the most because a lot of my items have sweet fragrances and smelling is a sensation so I thought perfect!"

Cupcake Soy Candles

What inspires her creations? "Bright colors, yummy scents and food inspire my designs. I absolutely love bright colors especially neon, the colors always cheer me up so a lot of my products are brightly colored. I'm a big fan of food, especially desserts, so I have a lot of fragrances that are dessert/sweet like that smell delicious. I also like to decorate products with sprinkles and candy".

Bath Salts

Why did Katie decide to open her shop and create the designs in it? "I've always loved and enjoyed making candles and bath/body products. I have so much fun making them and trying out new fragrances and colors as well as coming up with new ideas. So I thought it would be great to sell all the fun products that I like making and start up a little business. I'm really artsy and love being creative. Making bath & body products, along with candles, allows me to be both and it's just so darn fun".

Since it's Halloween I had to ask the shops what their favorite horror film is. Katie told me "Misery, American Psycho, Silence of the Lambs & too many more".

Sweet Sensations is having a 20% off sale so go have a look and find yourself a treat!
*******

Next up is Calaveras Y Diablitos run by Galy from Visalia. Her shop is filled with frightfully fantastic and kitschy kool accessories. Look...more lime green bats!

Lime Green Bats Hair Tie

What inspires Galy when she creates? "Ha, this one is easy. I'm inspired by what I love, Halloween, day of the dead, Mexican culture, horror, sideshows, zombies, carnivals, anything with a twisted feel."

Dia De Los Muertos Potholder

Why did she decide to open her shop? "I have been selling my handmade items since 2005. I started on Ebay and when I heard about Etsy I just had to do it".

Teal Skullerfly Hair Clip

I asked her why she chose to create the designs she sells? Galy says "I've always work menial 9 to 5 office jobs which quite literally suck the life & creativity out of you. I found that crafting kept my creative side alive. I use to draw & write short stories so crafting helps with my creative persona. It keeps me happy and knowing that people all around the world are enjoying something I created brings the most joy of all".

In the spirit of the season I had to ask the shops what their favorite horror film is. Galy had one simple response "A house of 1000 corpses!!!!!".

Take a look around Calaveras Y Diablitos and see what goodies might await you in the GIANT Giveaway.

Now for tonight's movie. Make sure to leave a comment below. Anyone who leaves a comment, with their opinion of the movie, for each of the 31 movies will get an extra 10 entries in our GIANT Giveaway.

Night 3 - Children of the Corn

Taglines - An adult nightmare.
And a child shall lead them...
In their world adults are not allowed... to
               live.
*******

Directed by Fritz Kiersch and released on March 9, 1984 by New World Pictures (rated R). A couple (Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton) break down in a creepy Nebraska town that is being run by creepy kids that years ago killed all the grown ups. Need we really say anymore? Good luck getting out of that town!
*******

This is one of many Stephen King books to be turned into a movie. It was actually a short story from the Night Shift Collection. I always find this a fun film to watch. It's creepy and eerie. It may be a little outdated looking but I think that adds to the atmosphere. Everything today is slick and shiny. The dated film quality gives it a creepier feel.

Creepy little kids and corn. What more do you need? Did I mention... it's creepy!
*******

Some trivia about the movie...
1. Though real corn was used for most of filming, polyurethane corn had to be used for the more difficult action sequences.
2. In the original theatrical trailer, Stephen King's name is misspelled as "Steven".
3. On the dashboard of Burt and Vicki's car is a copy of Night Shift, the Stephen King short story collection in which Children of the Corn originally appeared.

Attack of the 31 Nights of Halloween GIANT Giveaway Shop Feature - Punkrock Pinup

Punkrock Pinup is run by Katherine who lives and works in Buffalo, NY. The first item from her shop that caught my eye was this great black and lime green bat purse.

So where does the name Punkrock Pinup come from? Katherine tells us "My shop name came pretty naturally out of my love for music and the countercultures that spring from the different music forms. Sometimes I feel that I was born in the wrong era, but when else would I be able to enjoy Punk, Ska, Oi, Reggae, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Swing, Big Band Music, and so many amazing artists from the 40's- today".

Her shop is full of great accessories. I asked her what inspires her designs. "Music is my main inspiration, and is usually blasting throughout the house while I'm crafting".

Why did she decide to open her shop and make the great designs that she does? "I finally decided to start my shop after years of sewing and crafting for myself, while making items for friends and family along the way. It's really just a hobby at this point but I would love it if I could translate my love of creating into a career. I started creating purses for myself when I was about 7, sewing and crocheting my own designs. I didn't get into jewelry making until recently. I really just pick up on anything I find interesting or different and make a sincere attempt at trying new methods and designs whenever possible".

In the spirit of the season I had to ask the shops what their favorite horror film is. Katherine told me "I love horror movies, usually B Horror captures my heart, but give me a good Vampire or Werewolf movie any day. My all time favorite has to be Ginger Snaps, for sentimental reasons".

A big thanks to Katherine and Punkrock Pinup for joining in the giveaway. Take a moment to peruse her shop and see at what you might just win.
*******

Now for tonight's movie. Make sure to leave a comment below. Anyone who leaves a comment, with their opinion of the movie, for each of the 31 movies will get an extra 10 entries in our GIANT Giveaway.

Night 2 - The Lost Boys

Taglines - Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow
old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire.
Being wild is in their Blood.
*******

Directed by Joel Schumacher (St Elmo's Fire and Flatliners) and release on July 13, 1987 by Warner Brothers Pictures (rated R). Sam (Corey Haim) and Michael (Jason Patric) move to the town of Santa Carla, CA with their mom to start a new life. Unfortunately Santa Carla is home to a hip gang of Vampires (Kiefer Sutherland). Michael has his eye on the Vampire girl (Jamie Gertz) but the gang has their eyes on him. Will Sam be able to save him with the help of the fierce Frog Brothers (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander) or will Michael be doomed to wear black leather and a mullet for all of eternity?
*******

This movie came out when I was in high school and we all thought it was the greatest thing ever! I'm serious, we were fanatic about this movie. Wearing jackets with the logo on the back? That's right. Calling each other by our favorite character's name? Oh yeah. And no, I won't tell you who I was. Ha!

It was the Twilight of my generation. Except it was a true outright Vampire movie. They roamed at night, killed people, terrorized the locals and then returned to their cave by the sea to hang by their creepy little bat toes. I saw it not too long ago and it's still a fun watch. Yes, there are things that are a bit dated and therefore slightly cheesy, but it is always a blast from the past.
*******

Some trivia about the movie...
1. The title of the film is a reference to the companions of Peter Pan, who remained forever young.
2. The original screenplay written by Janice Fischer and James Jeremias was originally about a bunch of "Goonie-type 5th-6th grade kid vampires", with the Frog Brothers being "chubby 8 year old cub scouts", and Star being a boy instead of a love interest. Joel Schumacher hated that idea and told the producers he would only sign on if he could change them to teenagers, as he thought it would be more much sexier and interesting.
3. This movie invented the phrase "vamp out", which has passed into common usage on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
4. Kiefer Sutherland was only meant to wear the black gloves he wears as David when riding the motorbike. However, while messing around on the bike behind-the-scenes, he fell off, breaking his arm so he had to wear the gloves through the whole movie to cover his cast.
5. The names of the Frog brothers, Edgar and Alan, are a reference to Edgar Allan Poe, the well-known writer of horror fiction.
6. Characters in the movie say the name 'Michael' approximately 118 times.
7. This was Corey Haim and Corey Feldman's first film together, which marked the start of a popular 80s trend "The Two Corey's" in which Corey Feldman and Corey Haim starred together in a number of teenage films.

Night 1 - Final Destination

Taglines - Face Your Deepest Fears... Before They
                Face You.
Death Doesn't Take No For An Answer.
*******

Directed by James Wong (The-X Files and Millennium) and released on March 17, 2000 by New Line Cinema (rated R). After boarding a plane for a class trip to France Alex (Devon Sawa) has a vivid premonition that the plane is going to crash. After causing a commotion a handful of the class is taken off the plane and forced to remain behind. They watch as the plane carrying their friends and classmates explodes in mid-air. Now, one by one, death is stalking them as they desperately try to change their fate.
*******

This is a fun movie with lots of creative death scenes. Death is a very crafty soul! Plus, I thought it had a nice amount of suspense if it's your first time watching it. The makers paid great detail to foreshadowing the deaths to come. I watched the commentary on the DVD once and it's amazing how much hidden stuff is there if you know to look for it. There is a link below in the trivia section that has lots more of those kind of things. Beware though, some have spoilers.

And, as a special treat, we get to watch Seann William Scott as Hitchcock. Such a fun actor and he's a complete goober in this film.

As many horror films do this one spawned a whole mess of sequels. Personally, I don't find any of the other films much to talk about other than to say they are kinda stinky. The one huge exception is Final Destination 2. While the overall movie is not great the opening scene is the best part of any of the movies. If you have never watched one, these movies all have big slam-bang opening scenes. The opening of number 2 is by far the best and a truly scary bit of movie watching. To not give too much away for those who have not seen it I'll just say "highway pileup". If you haven't seen it go watch at least the beginning. You won't want to drive your car again. Oh, and never ever a motorcycle! Oooh, poor motorcycle boy.
*******

Some trivia about the movie...
1.  The story was originally the concept for an abandoned The X Files television script.
2. The woman at the check-in desk at the airport tells Alex that the plane leaves at 9:25, which is the same as his birthday (25th September). When he gets on the plane he sits in seat I (which is the 9th letter of the alphabet) and the seat is in row 25.
3. When the students are boarding the airplane, Alex looks down from the jetway and sees a luggage cart with the number 666 on it.
4. Clear's cabin was also the cabin from Lake Placid.
5. The music played throughout the movie was by John Denver, a musician who died in a plane crash.
6. Alex's chicken spread was actually mushed up banana.
7. Most characters in the film have last names after directors and stars of old black and white horror films. Hitchcock, Browning, Lewton, Schreck, etc.

The Munsters

The first stop on our tour is 1313 Mocking Bird Lane and Lily and Herman's House. Beautiful in all it's Munster glory or in it's new life as one of the Wisteria Lane houses on Desperate Housewives. Fear Friday Presents... Happy Birthday To Me

Come on in all you Hep Dolls and Ghoulish Girls for another Fear Friday. Every Friday The Lounge will offer up a movie for your enjoyment. The movies will be a wide variety from the horror genre. From vintage to classic to slasher to thriller to the just plain cheesy. So get the popcorn popped, kill the lights and get ready for a little fright. This weeks selection...

Happy Birthday To Me

Directed by J. Lee Thompson and released on May 15, 1981 by Columbia Pictures. Virginia (Melissa Sue Anderson) belongs to the most popular clique at her private school. She's happy, doing well in her classes and having fun. One problem though is that chunk of her memory she lost after that nasty little car accident last year. Oh yeah, and the fact that all of her friends are being killed off one by one!
*******
I thought this was an appropriate choice for this week's selection since the "Happy Birthday To Me" giveaway in underway. I remember when this movie came out in the theater but I was a little too young to have seen it then. But I do remember lots of kids talking about it and the famous shish kebab scene that was used on the posters and cover of the VHS box (I used the strange 2004 DVD version for my picture up top). I just watched it for the first time last week and if you grew up during the slasher era of the 80's, or are just a fan of the genre, this is a fun little movie. No great acting or writing here but isn't that half the fun? If you're old enough to remember watching "Little House on the Prairie" then you will recognize our main character as Mary Ingles. Wow, what a departure!

If you haven't seen it, or it's been a long while, give it a play. It's good cheesy fun with a nice twisty twist ending.
*******
A little trivia...
1. Most ads and posters for film carried a photo of a young man about to be orally impaled with a skewer of meat and vegetables, with the slogan "John Will Never Eat Shish Kebab Again." However, there is no character in the movie with this name.
2. Many fans were upset with the 2004 DVD release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment because, not only did it have a completely different cover to that of the infamous original poster and VHS cover, it featured a disco score in place of the atmospheric piano piece that originally played over the opening credits in theaters and VHS releases. In 2009, Anchor Bay/Starz Home Entertainment re-released the DVD using the original poster as the cover and restoring the original music over the opening sequence.

3. The press reported that in order to keep the "twist" ending a secret several endings were shot. This is untrue but helped hide the fact that while shooting, the film had no ending. The script was written with one ending that made sense to the story, but did not have a twist. So producers proceeded to film while tinkering with a twist. This explains why there is no build up to the ending.

From vintage to classic to slasher to thriller to the just plain cheesy. So get the popcorn popped, kill the lights and get ready for a little fright. This weeks selection...

Return of the Living Dead

Directed by Dan O'Bannon and released on August 16, 1985 by Orion Pictures Corporation. While working his first day at a medical warehouse, Freddy (Thom Mathews) learns about the top secret toxic bodies down in the basement from co-worker Frank (James Karen). What else is there to do but go look at them and oops...accidentally set them and the toxins free. Meanwhile, Freddy's punk rocker wannabe friends are waiting for him across the street in the graveyard. Bad place to be when the toxins hit those bodies and well, you know the story.

This has been a long time favorite of mine. I loved it when it came out and was pleasantly surprised that it has held up over the years. Yes, this is a big slice of stinky cheese. The acting is bad, the writing is bad and the outfits....eeeh! The 80's! But if you are a fan of the Living Dead movies and you can appreciate a great bad movie then you have to give this a try. It makes me laugh and the soundtrack is great.

A little trivia...
1. Tobe Hooper was originally slated to direct and it was supposed to be filmed in 3-D. Aaah! I did not know this. That would have been soooo cool!!!
2. The eye-test poster (seen most clearly after Frank and Freddy run into Burt's office after hearing the first re-animated cadaver) in Burt's office actually reads "Burt is a slave driver and a cheap son of a bitch who's got you and me here" if you put the letters together.
3. Some of the zombie extras were paid more to eat real calf brains in the film. Dan O'Bannon didn't want the actors to do anything he wasn't willing to do and ate some raw calf brains first in front of them.
4. After the "rabid weasels" are brought into the Resurrection Funeral Home and the tarp is removed, what is actually in the bags are those motorized toy monkeys that have the cymbals. The cymbals were removed for obvious reasons.
5. The film's German title is "Verdammt, die Zombies kommen", which is roughly "Oh Crap, the Zombies Are Coming" and the Danish title is "Ligene er ligeglade" which is roughly "The Dead Don't Care" - playing up the comical aspect of the film.
6. On the back of Freddy's jacket, in the theatrical version, the words "F**k You" are displayed. After realizing that the shot could not be used in case it was ever shown on TV, a second jacket was made that says "Television Version" and can be seen in the TV version of the movie.
