Night 1 and 2 of "The 31 Nights of Halloween Film Fest"

I've joined in the fun over at Domestic Witch's October Blog Party. You can find a list of participating blogs that are having fun celebrating the season of Halloween. When you're done here take a broom ride over to her site and you'll see the list of blogs on the right side bar.
****
Here at The Lounge we will have a "31 Nights of Halloween Film Fest". OK, so it's really only 30 nights since I started a little late but there will be more than enough movies to make up for it. Check back each day to see which movie is featured. Some days you may get more than one. They will be a random selection of my favorites.
****
Make sure to leave a comment for each movie as one lucky person will win their choice of pendant from Laughing Vixen Lounge at the end of the film fest. Please see rules at end of post.

Night 1 and 2 --- "Rosemary's Baby"
This is one of my favorite thrillers. And yes, my mother's name is Rosemary. Muuhaahaa

Roman Polanski directed this film adaptation of Ira Levin's bestselling horror novel. Released on June 12 1968 by Paramount Studios. Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) and her not-so-successful actor husband, Guy (John Cassavetes), move into a splendidly Gothic apartment building in New York called The Bramford. Of course, they were told of The Bramford's reputation for odd going-ons but they happily ignore it. After an unfortunate "accident" happens their neighbors, Roman and Minnie Castevet (Sidney Blackmer and Ruth Gordon), soon invade their lives. After Guy starts spending far too much time with the Castevets he begins to land acting roles. When Rosemary becomes pregnant she starts to become suspicious of her surroundings and the people who inhabit it.
****
Everything works here. The mood is one of uneasiness and paranoia as we watch Rosemary fall deeper and deeper into the world of The Bramford. Mia Farrow does such a great job that you can't help but feel everything she's feeling right along with her. Adding to the look of the film are the colorful outfits and home decor of the era. A great treat.

Some trivia about the movie...

1. The building used for The Bramford is the famous Dakota building in New York City. Many will remember it as the place John Lennon was living and was shot in front of.
2. Vidal Sassoon created the now famous "Pixie" cut for Mia Farrow to wear in the movie.
3. William Castle (famously know for his low budget movies such as "House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler and I Saw What You Did") owned the movie rights to the novel but Paramount would only agree to green-light the movie if he agreed not to direct it. He did however have a cameo in the film as "The man near the phone booth".
4. Mia Farrow does the vocals on the title-sequence lullaby.
5. Mia Farrow received divorce papers while filming. She was married to Frank Sinatra at the time.
6. Ruth Gordon won a well deserved Oscar for her role as the over friendly neighbor "Minnie".

"Dead and Breakfast" Fear Friday Selection July 12-18

Here we go with this week's Fear Friday title. You will either love me or hate me for this one. This week we are viewing the 2004 classic (hehe) "Dead and Breakfast". This is a big cheesy slice of horror movie heaven.
A van full of young people are forced to stay at a quaint little B&B in the middle of one hell of a town. We have Zombies, bad jokes, lots of squirting blood and a roaming band playing music as it happens. Yep! If you're looking for big names they aren't here, but it does star two of my favorites...Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural, Grey's Anatomy, The Watchmen) and Jeremy Sisto (May, Waitress, Law and Order). Others lucky enough to be in this gem...David Carradine, Ever Carradine, Portia de Rossi, Erik Palladino, Gina Philips and Diedrich Bader.
So go rent it (or borrow it), pick a night to watch it (we won't tell if it's not actually Friday), make some popcorn, turn off the lights and meet back here on Saturday with your questions answered and opinions ready to fly. There will be a new "review post" for everyone to post their answers on. Enjoy!
***You can also get 20 entries in the July Giveaway for playing along. Click here for details***
Questions:
  • Did this movie make you jump, yawn or laugh?
  • Did you like or dislike the monster/villain?

Fear Friday review of "Skinwalker".

So, what did everyone think of this week's selection "Skinwalkers"? I was quite surprised by this movie as I thought it might be a disaster. So here we go with the question and answers.
  • Did this movie make you jump, yawn or laugh? I would go with laugh. This is the perfect example of a brilliantly bad movie. It was fun, silly and made me giggle. A decadent cheesy little treat.

  • Did you like or dislike the monster/villain? These villains are great. They are a cross between extras in a Mad Max movie and a biker gang from a music video. Growing up on 80's movies I'm use to the bad guys looking like this. If I wanted this movie to be really good this would be a bad sign, but since I gave in to the silliness they seemed right at place.

  • If you were one of the characters in the movie which one would you be? Who wouldn't want to be the bad girl with the really big boobs who's kickin' ass and takin' down names? But I'm sure I'd end up being the mom who doesn't have a clue. She thinks her husband is dead but he's really a Skinwalkin' Wolf Man who's having fun with the chick with the really big boobs.

  • If the monster/villain could have had one superpower what should it have been? They seem to have lots of powers to start with. They scale walls like Spiderman, have a heightened sense of smell and heal extremely quickly. Maybe they could have flown. Flying werewolves sound pretty cool.

  • What was the best line or scene in the movie? I loved the gun fight about 20 minutes in to the movie. It was very over the top and completely cheesy. Especially liked the part when Nana turned around and was packin' heat. With her last bullet she hits the gas pump and gloriously blows up the gas station. Ah...you know you're in for a good one right then and there.

So leave your answers and let me know what you thought of it. We'll be back tomorrow with next week's film.
