Tagline - To know Lloyd Dobler is to love him.
Diane Court is about to know Lloyd
Dobler.
She's got every thing going for her.
He's going for her with every thing he's got.
A Lloyd meets girl story
Directed by Cameron Crow (Almost Famous) on released on April 14, 1989 by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (PG-13). Lloyd (John Cusack) and Diane (Ione Skye) fall in love the summer after graduation. When Diane gets a scholarship to study in England she has a choice to make. Listen to her father and dump Lloyd or listen to her heart and stay?
I love this movie. It doesn't get much better than this. This movie came out the same year I graduated from High School and it was Seattle before it was trendy to set everything in Seattle. Lloyd is charming and sweet. Diane is beautiful and warm. The movie is funny, sweet and even a little heart breaking. It is love at it's most simple and "basic" 8)
Best line - "I gave her my heart and she gave me a... pen" - Lloyd
Take a look at the original trailer...
2. Director Cameron Crowe couldn't find the love song he wanted until he heard Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". Gabriel asked to see part of the movie. Crowe had the production company send him an unfinished cut. Gabriel responded by saying he would let them use the song, as he liked the film. He was, however, wary about the part where the lead character overdosed at the end. It was then that Crowe realized that Gabriel had been sent a copy of Wired (1989) instead.
3. When Lloyd (John Cusack) drives along 45th street in Seattle, he passes the Guild 45th Theatre, which is showing Tapeheads (1988), in which Cusack also appeared.
4. Kirk Cameron was nearly cast as Lloyd instead of John Cusack.
5. John Cusack's kick boxing scenes in the ring, including the one where his nose is broken, are done with Don 'The Dragon' Wilson who is a real-life kick boxing champion.
6. Robert Downey Jr. turned down the lead played by John Cusack.
7. Christian Slater auditioned for the role of Lloyd Dobbler but director Cameron Crowe was adamant about getting John Cusack. Also, there was a tie between Ione Skye and actress Jennifer Connelly for the role of Diane Court.
8. Director Cameo: [Cameron Crowe] and wife Nancy Wilson as pedestrians in front of the mall as Lloyd passes by while recalling the site of their first "date".
9. The dojo featured in this movie is the same one that was used in The Karate Kid (1984) as the Cobra Kai dojo.
10. When Lloyd holds up the radio, it is actually playing a song by the group Fishbone. "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel was added post-production.
11. Lloyd makes several references in the movie to "Bell Square" mall, short for Bellevue Square (located in Bellevue, Washington). When Lloyd is driving in the rain and sees the mall, he is actually driving by Westlake Center (located in downtown Seattle).
12. Producer James L. Brooks said what inspired this movie was an incident where Brooks saw a man walking with his daughter. He saw them and wondered what would happen if the father committed a crime. Those thoughts were used to create the story.
13. The original Australian VHS release through CBS Fox features an early Simpsons short.
14. John Cusack put a scar on his right eyebrow for Lloyd's character. He says that the story behind that is that someone threw a rock at Lloyd when he was a kid.
15. The movie's line "I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen." was voted as the #73 of "The 100 Greatest Movie Lines" by Premiere in 2007.
16. Bebe Neuwirth's film debut.
17. Lloyd and Diane's school appears to be based on The Lakeside School, which is a very prestigious Seattle private school. In the movie, the school is called "Lakewood" (and has a rooster mascot, rather than a lion), but in Lloyd's first phone conversation with Diane, John Cusack mentions that at his annual party, Lloyd "dresses up as the Lakeside rooster."
18. Ione Skye once dated Anthony Kiedis, lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose song "Taste the Pain" opens the movie.

Some trivia about the movie...
1. The Smithereens were commissioned by Cameron Crowe to write the theme song for the movie, and they came up with "A Girl Like You". Crowe thought that the lyrics were too leading (they outline the entire plot), so he rejected it in favor of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". "A Girl Like You" went on to be included in The Smithereens' next album, "11", and in the movie Backdraft (1991) by Ron Howard.2. Where at the end, Mr. Darcy and the new Mrs. Darcy are joking about what he should call her now, and she says, "Mrs. Darcy" with a big grin. Thus he seals the end of the movie with a kiss on her forehead and each cheek after saying, "Mrs. Darcy", and the rest is history."

Tagline - A comedy for anyone who's ever been
in danger...of falling in love.
2. Don't Leave - Faithless
3. Always On My Mind - Elvis Presley
Directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Shallow Grave and 28 Days Later) and released on October 24, 1997 by Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (rated R). Robert (Ewan McGregor) is a cleaning man who takes his boss's daughter, Celine (Cameron Diaz), hostage after being fired and replaced by a robot. Two Angels are sent to earth to help bring the couple together. If they fail they are doomed to stay amongst the humans forever. Can they help these two fall in love?
This is one of my all time favorites! I remember seeing this movie on the new release wall at the video store. I had no idea who Ewan McGregor was but his picture on this movie and on the just released "Brassed Off" made me quite curious to find out who he was. So when the movies were finally checked in, little movies only ever had one copy, I grabbed them quick and proceeded to watch them right away.
I completely fell in love with this movie. It's funny, romantic, sweet and a bit of a fairy tale. If you just remember that Angels are in charge then all the things in the movie seem possible. And we get a song and dance number from Ewan. What more could I ask for? I always have to rewind this part and watch again before the movie can proceed.
If you haven't seen this one give it a try. It's something a bit different that just might win your heart.
Take a look at the original trailer...
2. The gas station attendant is whistling the techno song that played over the previous scene (when Robert confronts Neville and kidnaps Celine).
3. Ian Holm and Maury Chaykin also co-starred in The Sweet Hereafter (1997), in both movies they had only one scene together.
4. Starting with issue 1063 publishing date 7-oct-1997, the UK comic 2000AD printed an eight-part, 48-page, drawn strip adaptation of the movie. Scripted by David Bishop and drawn by Steve Yeowell, it met with a mixed reception from readers.
5. Both Holly Hunter and Ewan McGregor play the French horn.

Tagline - If only life were as easy as pie.
Directed by Adrienne Shelly and released on May 25, 2007 by Fox Searchlight (rated PG-13). Jenna (Keri Russell) is a waitress who makes amazing pies and is stuck in a loveless marriage with a cruel husband. She dreams of leaving him but now finds she's pregnant. Feeling like she is out of possibilities Jenna finds her world is about to change.
I love this movie. Why, I'm not really sure but then I watch it and it's just so obvious that this is a great little movie. It's sweet, sad, funny, a little heartbreaking in places but ends up leaving you in a feel good mood by the end. The characters are quirky, fun and likeable. Except for her husband Early who is just terrible but is played so well by Jeremy Sisto. Another favorite here is Nathan Fillion as her doctor.
The only side effect of this movie, I feel the need to bake pies! I love how she creates the pies in her mind around what's happening in her life. The colors in this movie are beautiful especially the pies. So vivid and lively. If you haven't seen this yet go watch it now! You won't be sorry.

To get in the Valentine spirit each shop was asked what their favorite love story movie is. Fenny said "My favorite romantic movie is Barbarella. On the surface it may not seem like it's really a romantic movie, but you gotta look at the subtext! To start with, Barbarella has some amazeballs outfits...which always makes me feel all melty and gooey (heh)."
"Barabarella is on a mission to find Dr. Durand Durand who has just invented a weapon (Earth is now a peaceful and weaponless society...YAY!). She lands on the planet Tau Centi (the last known location of Dr. Durand Durand, when she gets attacked by creepy kids and their cannabalistic dolls. She is heroically rescued by Mark Hand, but soon realizes that as awesome as he is, he's not the right guy for her/ So she continues on her mission to find Dr. Durand Durand (which the band Duran Duran is named after...which just adds to a layer of awesome to the movie). On her search she meets an angel in a loincloth (*m'mmmm*) named Pygar, saves him from the Great Tyrant, completes her mission...all while looking amazing. Did I mention that Pygar is super yummy?"
"Without a doubt, the most fantastic and romantic movie ever. Although, my husband may disagree (but then, he loves that creepy ghost filled horror movie "Field of Dreams"...*shudder*)."

Tagline - A Comedy About Eight Friends Who Return
To The Best Summer Of Their Lives!
Music selections from the movie on the jukebox -
1. Crimson and Clover - Tommy James and the Shondells
2. Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah - Alan Sherman
3. Ready For Love - Bad Company
4. Susie Q - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Directed by Mike Bender (The Upside of Anger and Reign Over Me) and released on April 23, 1993 by Touchstone Pictures (rated PG-13). 8 friends reunite at the camp they spent their summers at. Old friends are found, old loves are relived and new adventures await.
I went to see this movie, with my sister, in the theater when it was new. It ended up being one of our most loved movies. It's funny to the point where we are about crying we are laughing so hard. I love all the camp pranks they play on the one poor guy. Maybe it looks fun because we never spent time at summer camps except for outdoor school in the sixth grade and as a counselor in high school. Can't imagine I would have enjoyed it back then but through this movie it looks so nostalgic.
This was also the first time I saw Bill Paxton do something other than the annoying A-hole role (Weird Science, Aliens etc) and just fell in love. He is still one of my favorite actors to watch.
And for any Evil Dead/Sam Raimi fans this is a must see! This movie is inspired by Sam Raimi and Mike Bender's real life summers spent at the real Camp Tamakwa. Sam is brilliant in the movie as the not so swift "Stick".
Sorry, could not find the trailer for this one.
2. One of the founders of the real Camp Tamakwa is Uncle Lou Handler, whom the character in the movie is named after.
3. Matt Craven plays one of the adults returning to summer camp, where they have such fond memories. Craven also played a CIT (counselor in training) in Meatballs (1979), another film about summer camp. Both films were shot in Canada.
4. Ashley Williams, who plays Ida Heinken in the flashback scenes, is the younger sister of Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who plays Gwen.

I love the characters, the music, and the cinematography. I still have the video and soundtrack to the movie an it has seen me through two boyfriends and a current husband! I also think it has enough comedy in it to appeal to men and makes a good romantic movie to watch with your man. I would say my second would be Breakfast at Tiffany's, because Audrey Hepburn is so lovely!"
Fridays at Laughing Vixen Lounge Blog are Fear Fridays where we review a different horror/scary/thriller/classic horror movie. Tonight our Fear Friday movie is keeping with our Valentine theme...

Nothing says 'date movie' like a 3D ride to
hell!
Directed by Patrick Lussier (Dracula 2000 and the upcoming Halloween III 3D) and released on January 19, 2009 by Lionsgate (rated R). Starring Jensen Ackles (Supernatural), Kerr Smith (Dawson's Creek) and Jamie King (Gary Unmarried). In the mining town of Harmony a horrible accident kills 5 people in the mine. The one survivor awakes from a coma on Valentine's Day and kills 22 people. Amongst the dead are a bunch of teens who were having a party down at the mine (yeah, that sounds like a smart idea!). Only a few teens survive. Skip forward 10 years as everyone comes together again in the small town. People have changed, things have changed but the one this that remains the same....It's Valentine's Day and people are gonna start dying!
I usually stand behind the original version of a movie as the best but here I actually find the remake to be much more fun to watch. The two do vary a bit in story and who the killer ends up being but they have the same overall story and feel to them. The remake is fun and kept me guessing who the killer was. Early on I had my suspicion but it was good at making me doubt my choice. I flopped like a fish back and forth until the end. Which is a good thing in my book. I don't want to completely see the ending coming from a mile away.

Night 10 - The Lake House
Tagline - How do you hold on to someone you've
never met?
Music selections from the movie on the jukebox -
1. This Never Happened Before - Clientele
2. Time Has Told Me - Nick Drake
3. I Can't Seem To Make You Mine - Paul McCartney
Directed by Alejandro Agresti and released on June 16, 2006 by Warner Brothers Pictures. Kate (Sandra Bullock) is moving out of her beautiful glass house on the lake. She leaves a note in the mailbox for the next tenant to forward her mail to her new address. Alex (Keaun Reeves) opens the mailbox and finds her note. Only thing is, Alex lives in the lake house two years prior to Kate. Wooooo...spooky. The two fall in love as they exchange many letters. Can their love survive the "long distance" relationship and will they be able to find each other in time?
I like the concept of this movie. It's all about destiny and a little magic. If the whole time difference starts to get too confusing just don't think about it that much and go with it. It's sweet, a little sad in spots and leaves you with that wonderful feeling that anything can happen. I just love Keanu and this is a great little movie.
Take a look at the original trailer...
Some trivia about the movie...
1. John Cusack was the first choice for the role of Alex Wyler, but he declined.
2. The name of the exclusive restaurant in the film is "Il Mare". "Il Mare" is also the name of the house and the International title of the Korean film upon which "The Lake House" is based, Siworae (2000).
3. Sandra Bullock states that she felt compelled to name the dog "Jack" after the character of Keanu Reeves in Speed (1994) the first movie the two of them made together.
4. Director Cameo: [Alejandro Agresti] man using breath spray on the bus, beside Sandra Bullock.
5. The film clip featuring Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant is from the Alfred Hitchcock film Notorious (1946).
6. The lake house measured 2000 square feet and sat on top of steel beams ten feet above the waterline. It used 35 tons of steel and required nearly 100 carpenters, welders and painters to build it.
7. The actual house did not exist and was built for the movie, then dismantled. The coordinates are 41° 42' 49.92" N, 87° 53' 10.56" W. (Google Earth can be used to view this location now, and using the History feature, the house can still be viewed.)
8. The Lake House used was located on Maple Lake, a small and well known haunted fishing lake located in Willow Springs, IL. Read more about the haunted lake here.
