*******
Directed by Tony Scott (The Hunger, Top Gun and Enemy of the State) and released on September 10, 1993 by Warner Brothers Pictures. Clarence (Christian Slater) and Alabama (Patricia Arquette) fall in love after their first date and get married the next day. After a suitcase of cocaine falls into their lap, they decide to go to LA to have a friend sell it for them. Problem is the owners of the suitcase have other plans. Will Clarence and Alabama live long enough to survive their honey moon?

I just loved Christian Slater when I was a teenager so this was a favorite. I watched the film not too long ago and, though some of it caused a little eye rolling, most of it still sucked me in. It is a bloody, extremely violent, shocking, colorful worded movie so be warned but it is one hell of a ride. You'll see lots of familiar faces, get some good laughs and, if you believe in love at first site, you might just find a new favorite.

Plus it has some really good music. Make sure to check out "You're So Cool" on the jukebox. It's one of my favorites and has been used in many movies since this one.

A little trivia...
1. Writer Quentin Tarantino sold this script to fund Reservoir Dogs (1992).
2. The screenplay of True Romance (1993) was originally part of a very long screenplay written by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary. The other half of it was used for the film Natural Born Killers (1994). In both films Tom Sizemore plays a cop.
3. The comic book that Clarence shows Alabama is "Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos" #18. In this issue, Nick has gotten a ring for his sweetheart (Pamela Hawley) that he keeps on a chain around his neck. Later in the story, he gets in a fight with a Nazi and the ring falls overboard but Fury dives into the ocean to retrieve it. What Clarence doesn't tell Alabama is that when Fury returns to give the ring to his love he finds she's been killed.
4. It was Brad Pitt's idea for his character to be a stoner who never leaves the couch.
5. Following the "eggplant scene", Dennis Hopper was concerned about being "shot" by Christopher Walken with the prop gun so close against his head for fear of being burned by the barrel. Director Tony Scott assured him the gun was 100% safe, and even tested it by having the prop man fire it against his (Scott's) own forehead. But upon firing the prop gun the barrel extended about a third of an inch and Scott ended up on the floor with blood pouring from the wound.
6. Jack Black appears in a cameo as a theater usher in a deleted scene.
7. Tony Scott gave Patricia Arquette the Cadillac featured heavily in the film as a gift after filming wrapped.
8. That's Patricia Arquette's four-year-old son Enzo Rossi in the final scene.
9. According to director Tony Scott, Val Kilmer had originally wanted to play the character of Clarence. Kilmer spent 8 hours in make-up being transformed into Elvis Presley. Fortunately, he was only required for two days of filming. The character is called Mentor in the closing credits so as not to face any litigation from the Presley estate.
10. There are 21 on-screen deaths, all male, all from death by gunshot.

Night 9... "Wuthering Heights"

Tagline - I am Heathcliff! I love a woman who belongs to another man!... My love was fierce... my hate is burning! I will have vengeance!
*******
Directed by William Wyler (The Best Years Of Our Lives, Roman Holiday and Ben Hur) and release by April 7, 1939 by United Artists. This is the story of Heathcliff (Laurence Olivier) and Cathy ( Merle Oberon) who fall in love as children but are torn apart by the difference in their social class as adults. In an attempt to be worthy of Cathy's love, Heathcliff leaves to make a name for himself and return to her a wealthy man. But he returns too late. Cathy has moved on thinking he has left her. Can the two find their way back to each other or will they instead live in torment and sadness?
*******
This is classic old school story telling. Everyone worries about their social class and being with the proper person. It's dark, moody and even has a ghost haunting the moors. It's a love story that is tortured and sad but who doesn't love a good tragic romance. If you have never seen it give it a try.

A little trivia...
1. Vivien Leigh wanted to play the lead role, alongside her then lover and future husband Laurence Olivier, but studio executives decided the role should go to Merle Oberon. They later offered Leigh the part of Isabelle Linton, but she declined and Geraldine Fitzgerald was cast.
2. The film only depicts sixteen of the novel's thirty-four chapters and is set in 19th century instead of 1771-1801.
3. Samuel Goldwyn later claimed that this was his favorite production.
4. Laurence Olivier found himself becoming increasingly annoyed with William Wyler's exhausting style of film-making. After yet another take, he is said to have exclaimed, "For God's sake, I did it sitting down. I did it with a smile. I did it with a smirk. I did it scratching my ear. I did it with my back to the camera. How do you want me to do it?" Wyler's retort was, "I want it better."
5. Los Angeles - April 5, 1939: Samuel Goldwyn has withdrawn "Wuthering Heights" from the entire province of Quebec. Quebec censors demanded deletions because certain sequences dealt with divorce and infidelity, situations long frowned upon by the Quebeck board. Goldwyn refused to make the cuts. Whether the picture will play in other provinces is not known.
6. Real heather was imported from England and re-planted in California to help simulate the look of the moors.
7. Producer Samuel Goldwyn felt that script was too dark for a romance movie, so he asked several writers to do a rewrite on the script, including a young John Huston, who said that the script needed no rewrite, it was perfect as it was.
8. Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier apparently detested each other. Legend has it that when William Wyler yelled "Cut!" after a particularly romantic scene, Oberon shouted back to her director about her co-star "Tell him to stop spitting at me!"

  1. Is tomorrow night's movie Indian Summer? I had to search the internet to come up with that guess; I've never heard of it before but apparently it involves Sam Raimi so now I'm curious.
