Night 14 of the Attack of the 14 Nights of Halloween Giveaway

Well my little ghouls and dolls we have come to the end of our 5th annual Attack of the 14 Nights of Halloween. It is this Vixen's favorite time of year. I love to do this giveaway for all of you and, despite the late night cursing you may hear as I scramble to finish that night's post, I really do hate to see it come to an end. But it is Halloween so lets all go have a fiendishly good time tonight and raise a little scare! For tomorrow it will be time to pack up the cob webs, put the bats back in their cave, smash the pumpkins and, for heaven's sake, stop eating bags of miniature candies!

Have no fear, you still have until 11:59 pm (PDT) November 1st to get your entries in for all the giveaway fun. If you are arriving late to the party you can find all the info on the MAIN GIVEAWAY POST. For those who have been following all along this is the final post. Please give a big thank you to all of the shops that donated prizes this year and the blogs that helped spread the word. And thank you to everyone who joined in the fun. We hope it helped bring a little extra fun to your Halloween season. We will be back again next October to do it all over again.

Example ~ In the twilight, Mr. Blue killed Miss Death in the bedroom with a skillet then escape out the window.

While watching the movies on our list I could not help but think about...

What have we learned from watching horror films?
1. Only the skinny survive! If you can't fit through small openings you will never escape.
2. If you leave your window/doors unlocked or open then you should not be surprised when the killer appears in your house.
3. If you hear something outside at night don't go out and offer yourself up to it.
4. Do not touch things that fall from the sky.
5. If your wife is telling you something is evil, listen to her.
6. Never trust the local sheriff, gas attendants, doctor, etc. They are part of it!
7. Never say "I'll be right back". You won't!
8. Hit him again.
9. Don't sit with your back to the killer with your eyes shut thinking "It all OK now". It's not. You only hit him once and now he's standing up.
10. After the third time #9 happens...learn from it!

Zombie Charm Bracelet or Necklace - Extreme Edition

And now for our final feature...

Night 14 ~ Creature from the Black Lagoon

Tagline - Not since the beginning of time has the world beheld terror like
                 this!
Centuries of passion pent up in his savage heart!
                 Terrifying monster ravages mankind!

Directed by Jack Arnold (It Came From Outer space and Tarantula) and released on March 5, 1954 by Universal Studios (Not rated). When a fossilized hand of an unknown creature is found in the Amazon a crew sets out to uncover the rest of the body. Little do they know that they are about to find more than just a fossil!

All of the Universal monsters are great but I have a real fondness for the Gill Man. This film was originally released in 3-D and I've had the chance to see it 3 times on the big screen. Very fun! The movie also spawned 2 sequels ~ Revenge of the Creature (Clint Eastwood, uncredited, in his first film) and The Creature Walks Among Us.

I used to do weekly movie reviews of scary movies on this blog. This movie was the first Fear Friday review I wrote so I am going to present it to you in the format I originally used which was a set of 5 questions. If you have seen the movie please feel free to post your answers to the questions below for fun.

  1. Did this movie make you jump, yawn or laugh? I would go with laugh. With all the 50's stereotypes, bad lines and overall cheesiness it's quite amusing. Which is why I love it so much.

  2. Did you like or dislike the monster/villain? Who wouldn't love this monster. Yes it's a face only a mother could love but who wouldn't be angry and irritable after such a bad lip job. I just adore the Gill Man.

  3. If you were one of the characters in the movie which one would you be? I'd like to think I would be our leading lady Kay. Scientist by day...Sexy bombshell by night. Looks great in a bathing suit and does an amazing over the shoulder glance and scream. But I fear I would end up being the Creature. Shuffling around, trying to get peoples attention but instead they just shoot me with pointy sticks.

  4. If the monster/villain could have had one superpower what should it have been? Might have been fun if he was electrified like an eel. Then he could have gone around zapping people.

  5. What was the best line or scene in the movie? Well, for the first 30 minutes of the movie we only saw the Creature's hand along with a very overpowering string of musical notes. Ba Ba BAAAAAAAAA...Hand...Ba Ba BAAAAAAAA...Hand. I found this most amusing. You could have made a drinking game out of it. I also liked the bat that flew at Dave's head at the end. And when approached by the Creature, instead of turning and running, Kay chooses to turn and...fall down. Priceless.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. Ricou Browning, a professional diver and swimmer, was required to hold his breath for up to 4 minutes at a time for his underwater role as the "Gill Man." The director's logic was that the air would have to travel through the monster's gills and thus not reveal air bubbles from his mouth or nose. Thus, the costume was designed without an air tank. In the subsequent films, this detail was ignored and air can be seen emanating from the top of the creature's head.
2. In this film, the eyes of the Creature were a fixed part of the rubber construction of the suit. The actors who played the part of the "Gill Man" could barely see, if at all. In the second film, the eyes have been, somewhat ludicrously, replaced with large, bulbous fish-eyes to assist in the actor's vision.
3. When William Alland was a member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre, he heard famed Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa tell of a legend about a humanoid creature that supposedly lived in South America. That legend became the origin of this film.
4. The Creature, using the name "Uncle Gilbert", appeared in an episode of the TV series The Munsters The episode is titled "Love Comes to Mockingbird Heights."
5. The Creature's appearance was based on old seventeenth-century woodcuts of two bizarre creatures called the Sea Monk and the Sea Bishop. The Creature's final head was based on that of the Sea Monk, but the original discarded head was based on that of the Sea Bishop. In one sequence Julie Adams' character is captured by the creature and carried into a cave. During the filming the stuntman misjudged where the side of the entrance was and accidentally struck Ms. Adams' head against the wall, knocking her unconscious.
6. Two different stuntmen were used to portray the creature and therefore two different suits were used in the movie. Ricou Browning played the creature when it was in the water and wore a lighter suit. Ben Chapman played the creature when it was out of the water with a darker suit.
7. Milicent Patrick created the design of the Creature, although Bud Westmore, who was the head of Universal's makeup department at the time, would take credit publicly for the Creature's design.
8. When the Creature attacks Zee, the script called for him to pick him up and throw him into the camera for the 3-D effect. Unfortunately, the wires used to lift Zee up to make it appear as though he was actually being picked up by the Creature kept breaking. After two tries, Jack Arnold decided to just have Zee get strangled to death.
9. When the movie is projected in the correct aspect ratio the telephone pole showing above the trees isn't visible. Unfortunately, on TV, a different aspect ratio is normally used, revealing the pole.
10. Forrest J. Ackerman, a horror and science fiction writer for Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine, bought the mask and claws of the Creature's costume from a young man who had once used them as a Halloween costume. The costume pieces were discarded by Universal after production had finished on the three films (Creature from the Black Lagoon and it's two sequels) and were later recovered from the studio's dumpster by a janitor, who thought the ensemble would make a good Halloween costume for his son. Other costume pieces were recently sold at auction by Bud Westmore, who was an assistant to Millicent Patrick, the original designer of the costume.

Halloween Movie Marathon

Night 13 ~ Single White Female

Tagline - How do you lock the terror out... when you already invited it in?

Directed by Barbet Schroeder (Reversal of Fortune and Desperate Measures), based on the novel "SWF Seeks Same" by John Lutz, and released on August 14, 1992 by Columbia Pictures (Rated R). Alison Jones (Bridget Fonda) is madly in love with Sam Rawson (Steven Weber) and happily planning their wedding. That is until Sam's ex-wife calls and Alison finds out that they just had sex earlier that day. What is a girl to do? Kick his sorry butt out and place an ad for a new roommate. Unfortunately Alison does not pick the right roommate.

This movie is a fun watch. I remember seeing this at the drive-in with a bunch of girlfriends. It still holds up 24 years later.

We all know that Hedy is the wrong choice but Alison is not as quick as the rest of us. She will just have to learn the hard way and that's what makes for a fun ride. It's great to see Hedy slowly take over Alison's life as she continues to loose her grasp on reality. Not that she had much of a grasp to start with!

The movie becomes a bit campy and over the top as the big ending starts to unfold but that's the beauty of it. Watching Hedy go crazy and Alison kicking her butt is just great. I have always been a huge fan of Steven Weber (most will remember him from the TV show "Wings") and lets just say his final scene in this movie...priceless!!!

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie...
1. Bridget Fonda had the choice of playing either the Allie role or the Hedy role. She ended up choosing to play Allie, because she said it was a harder role.
2. Like most old apartment buildings the building in this movie does not contain a floor 13. You can see the floor numbers on the elevator in a couple shots.
3. The Ansonia on the Upper West Side of Manhattan was used for the apartment building. The interiors were shot on a sound stage but the scenes in the stairwells were shot at The Ansonia.
4. Whoopi Goldberg auditioned for the role of Allison Jones.
5. To prepare for their fight to the finish scenes, both Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh took several self-defense lessons.

Halloween Movie Marathon

Night 12 ~ Fright Night

Tagline - There are some very good reasons to be
              afraid...of the dark.
If you love being scared, it'll be the night of
              your life.

Written and directed by Tom Holland (Child's Play, The Temp and Thinner) and released on August 2, 1985 by Columbia Pictures (Rated R). Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) is a huge horror fan and loves to watch a little late night show called "Fright Night". So when he starts to insist that his new neighbor is a Vampire it's no wonder that no one believes him. Poor crazy Charley.

Of course Charley isn't crazy and his new neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon) is a blood sucker. With the help of Peter Vincent "Vampire Killer" (Roddy McDowall), host of "Fright Night", Charley's two friends Amy (Amanda Bearse) and Evil set out to convince Charley that everything is just fine. They fail miserably and must spend the rest of the movie fighting the creatures of the dark.

Yes, the effects are a little on the dated side with this one but a lot of it is still quite good and the rest will make you giggle. If you're old enough to remember the 80's you'll find lots to cringe about while watching the outfits go by.

This plays out like a good old fashion horror film. The teenagers run around with no one believing them. The Vampire lives in the big spooky old house next door. They use all the classic Vampire lore in telling the story. It's a fun and creepy ride. Oh, and Charley drives one heck of a nice old Mustang that no regular teenager could actually afford.

What makes me so fond of this movie is Peter Vincent and Fright Night. I wish there was a late night show on just like it. I would so watch that! It may not be Roddy McDowall's best acting roll or movie but it is my favorite to watch. He plays Peter Vincent so well as a unhappy and scared man living behind his alter ego. As the movie progresses he finds the strength to live up to the name "Vampire Killer".

And I have this thing about the extra long fingers that Vampires sport in the movies. It creeps me out to no end. Why? I don't know why. It just isn't right! They have got them close to perfect in this movie (the best being Nosferatu 1922). Eeeeew!

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. The character Peter Vincent is named for two well know horror actors Peter Cushing and Vincent Price.
2. Chris Sarandon is also known for voicing the character Jack Skellington in "A Nightmare Before Christmas".
3. A puppet that was created for, but not used in, another Columbia Pictures production, Ghost Busters, is visible in Fright Night.
4. The most successful horror film financially of the 1985 Summer season. Also the second highest grossing horror film of 1985. The first was A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge.
5. The fact that Amy resembles a lost love of Dandridge's was Chris Sarandon's idea. He wanted Dandridge to have added dimensions - and not just be some evil bad guy.
6. The film's genesis came in Tom Holland wanting to do a vampire story crossbred with The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Avoiding using special effects at the expense of good acting, Holland included plenty of humour, warmth and relationships. He also wanted to make it valid to a modern audience by rooting it in reality - hence the suburbia setting.
7. Although William Ragsdale and Amanda Bearse are playing teenagers, in reality Ragsdale was 24 and Bearse was 27 during filming.
8. When playing Peter Vincent, Roddy McDowall based his character on some bad actors from the films he used to watch as a child.
9. Much of the film's 9.5 million dollar budget was spent on special effects (it was the first vampire film to spend one million dollars on special effects).
10. Tom Holland's directorial debut.
11. The character of Peter Vincent claims he has been fired from hosting Fright Night because "all they want are demented mad men running around in ski masks hacking up young virgins." - an obvious reference to the Friday the 13th franchise. The bouncer (Nick Savage) at the club, who first confronts Jerry, plays one of the 3 motorcycle gang members killed by Jason Vorhees in Friday the 13th Part III.
12. Charlie Sheen auditioned for the role of Charlie Brewster, but the director decided his looks weren't right for the character, so William Ragsdale was ultimately cast. "Charlie Sheen was a hero," Higgins commented in an interview with The Projection Booth. "Bill Ragsdale in playing Charlie Brewster was the guy next door."
13. Writer/director Tom Holland conceived the role of Peter Vincent with Vincent Price in mind, but Price's health was declining and he was trying to shy away from accepting horror roles by that point in his career.

Halloween Movie Marathon

Night 11 ~ Young Frankenstein

Tagline - The scariest comedy of all time!

Directed by Mel Brooks (The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Dracula: Dead and Loving It) and released on December 15, 1974 by Twentieth Century Fox (Rated PG). Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) inherits his grandfathers castle and all it's possessions. Despite his resistance to his grandfather's ideas he quickly changes his mind when he stumbles upon some hidden journals in his grandfather's secret library. With the help of his assistants Igor (Marty Feldman) and Inga (Terri Garr) Dr. Frankenstein will attempt to bring his grandfather's dream to life.

This is the best of the best. A loving homage to classic horror. The comedy is so silly it's stupid but at the same time it's really rather brilliant. Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder are at their finest here and it's a treat to watch them. The sets and atmosphere are beautiful and Peter Boyle is such fun as the monster. This is a yearly Halloween staple at my house. And always remember, "Put ze candle back!"

Take a look at the original trailer

Some trivia about the movie
1. The film was shot with many of the same props and lab equipment as the original Frankenstein (1931).
2. The howling wolf sound on the ride to the castle was made by director Mel Brooks.
3. The idea of Frederick's dart hitting a cat was ad-libbed on set. When Gene Wilder threw his dart off camera, director Mel Brooks quickly screamed like a cat to create the illusion.
4. The scene in which the creature contemplates throwing the little girl into the lake ("No more flowers. What shall we throw in now?"), is a homage to a scene in Frankenstein (1931). That scene was cut and not restored to the original until its video release 50 years later.
5. Gene Wilder conceived the "Puttin' on the Ritz" scene, while Mel Brooks was resistant to it, feeling it detracted from the fidelity to Universal horror films in the rest of the film. It was only when he saw it with a howling audience that Brooks was confident about the sequence.
6. Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle and Marty Feldman appear together in this film by virtue of the fact that their mutual agent had a deal with the movie studio.
7. The shifting hump on Igor's back was an ad-libbed gag of Marty Feldman's. He had surreptitiously been shifting the hump back and forth for several days when cast members finally noticed. It was then added to the script.
8. Rock band Aerosmith took a break from a long night of recording to see "Young Frankenstein" in 1974. Steven Tyler wrote the band's hit "Walk This Way" the morning after seeing the movie, inspired by Marty Feldman's first scene, the "walk this way... this way" scene.
9. When Mel Brooks was preparing "Young Frankenstein," he found that Ken Strickfaden, who had made the elaborate electrical machinery for the lab sequences in the Universal Frankenstein films, was still alive in the Los Angeles area. He visited Strickfaden and found that Strickfaden had saved all the equipment and had it stored in his garage. Brooks made a deal to rent the equipment for his film and gave Strickfaden the screen credit he'd deserved, but hadn't gotten, for the original films.

Tonight's Clue ~ Abby something. Abby who? Abby.... Normal.

Halloween Movie Marathon

Night 10 ~ May

Tagline - Be Careful... She Just Might Take Your Heart.

Directed by Lucky McKee (The Woods and Red) and released on June 6, 2003 by Lions Gate Films (Rated R). May (Angela Bettis) has always been "different" and has trouble finding friends. Her best friend is Suzy a creepy old doll kept inside a glass box. May tries so hard to connect with the people around her like Adam (Jeremy Sisto) the boy she likes and Polly (Anna Faris) the girl she works with. But no one seems to understand May and no one sticks around for long. As May's mother once told her "If you can't find a friend make one".

This is a wonderful movie. It's so much more than a horror film. Angela Bettis is so good in her role as May that you can't help feeling for this character. We can all see a little bit of ourselves in her. The wanting to be accepted, trying to get the attention of a certain boy, wanting someone to like you for who you are and all the other insecure feelings we all have. May just happens to be a little closer to the edge of sanity then most. It's both sad and scary to watch her slide into madness.

The look of the film and the music work well. There is some blood but it's not over the top. It's just used effectively. The scene with the blind children, Suzy and May is hard for me to watch but wonderfully done. The best scene here will come at the very end of the last scene. The first time I saw it I was creeped out. It is so unexpected and so wrong on so many levels!!! It's subtle but very effective. You should really go check this one out.

May should be available to rent on most DVD and streaming services.

Take a look at the original trailer.

Some trivia about the movie.
1. Director Lucky McKee has a cameo as the man with his girlfriend in the elevator, both times.
2. Originally the film opened with a lengthy introduction to May as a child. But when the film appeared to be taking too long to get to its point, most of those scenes were cut. The opening with the adult May, specifically the first scene with her and her doll, were shot quickly and only to make the point that May was lonely as quickly as possible.
3. The scene where Blank and May meet was a re-shoot. In the original scene, May was not cold and vague, but angry, and insulted people as they walked by on the street. The scene ended with the two of them in the park. That scene is still in the film but entirely replaced and reedited. It is now the scene where Adam and May meet and have their final talk in the park. The scene is told only through close ups, with both May and Adam glancing off camera. They were originally looking at Blank who was sitting beside her but he was edited out of the scene completely.
4. There is a movie called "Roman" which is directed by Angela Bettis and stars Lucky McKee. A reversal of roles.
5. The teenage girl who asks May "got any cold ones in there" is dressed up as a zombie cheerleader in the exact same costume and makeup from Lucky McKee's very first movie, _All Cheerleaders Must Die (2001) (V).
6. In the very beginning of the film we see young May with a black patch over her left eye (the right eye, from an audience perspective). Skip forward a few minutes and May is now a young woman with a "lazy" right eye (the left eye, from an audiences' perspective).
7.
When May takes a cigarette out of the Bilson box, a camel cigarette logo can be seen along the bottom part of the cigarette.

Minou Bazaar is owned by Meenoo from Alexandria, Virginia. With Indian inspired vintage and handcrafted jewelry her shop is filled with beautiful colors and shapes.

Fox Necklace

How did you choose your shop name?
"There is a famous clothing store in India called Meena Bazaar. I wanted a twist on that name using my own name, Meenoo. Minou is a cute spelling of my real name. Also, it means “kitten” in French (as I found out freshman year in high school), and as a certified cat lady, I couldn’t resist that!"

Black Bollywood Jhumka Earrings

Why did you choose to make/sell what you do?
"I take Indian themes and design and simplify them for the modern woman to create jewelry you can wear every day. I make jewelry for women who are curious, romantic, and have a passion for other cultures, beauty, history, mythology, and art. I love using vintage Indian bits and pieces of neglected components and findings and combining them with vintage Lucite, crystals, and gemstones to create something new. I take great care and time in choosing shapes, patterns, and colors that remind me of India and South Asia and its endless source of inspiration."

Moon and Stars Necklace

What inspires the designs/creations you make?
"I am inspired by color, nature, history, mythology, literature, and of course the shiny and sparkly. Additionally, I enjoy upcycling vintage Indian-inspired findings into new jewelry!"

Tonight's Clue ~ If you can't find a friend make one.

Halloween Movie Marathon

Night 9 ~ Night of the Living Dead

Tagline - They won't stay dead.
Pits the dead against the living in a struggle for survival!
If it doesn't scare you, you're already dead!

Directed by George A. Romero (The Crazies, Creepshow and Monkey Shines) and released on October 1, 1968 by Continental Distributing (not rated). Barbara and Johnny are visiting the local cemetery to pay respects to their grandfather. Unfortunate place to be when the dead start to come back to life! Can the living survive the walking dead?

"They're coming to get you Barbara." Is there a more iconic phrase in all of horror film history? OK, so maybe a handful of others but this is classic! What a wonderfully chilling opening scene as Johnny teases his sister for being afraid of the cemetery. Not knowing of course that they are really coming to get them. The dead that is.

George A. Romero and his Living Dead movies have defined what a Zombie is to modern society. If you are not familiar, his original trilogy consist of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. In later years he has added to that Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead. Most will agree that the later 3 do not stand up to the first 2 and get progressively bad. The original 2 movies have been remade a time or two but nothing compares to the classic.

Mr. Romero has noted that his inspiration for this movie comes mostly from the novel I Am Legend (made into a movie 3 times, Last Man On Earth, The Omega Man and I Am Legend). He said that while he did mostly rip off the idea he also changed it to tell the story from the beginning and not from after the virus spread. Of course he also changed the infected from Vampire like creatures to the dead returning to life. Romero has also sited Carnival of Souls as an inspiration. If you are not familiar with this movie I highly suggest it. It's one of my favorites!

While much has been made about the "social commentary" of these movie, Night of the Living Dead - the turbulence of the '60s, Dawn of the Dead - a satire on consumerism, Day of the Dead - conflict between science and the military and Land of the Dead - a look at the clash between society (class) levels, but Romero, and others, will insist that it was never intended. They were just out to make a movie that would sell.

Night of the Living Dead should be available to stream and should be available on most DVD services.

Take a look at the original trailer. If you like the style of old trailers (I love them!) this one is fun.

Some trivia about the movie...
1. The term Zombie is never used in the movie. Rather the dead are referred to as Ghouls.
2. Actor and co-producer Karl Hardman (the father in the basement), also worked as makeup artist, sound effects engineer, and took the photos used for the closing credits.
3. The working title was simply "Monster Flick".
4. The music used in the film was from a Capitol/EMI Records stock music library and was originally used in Teenagers From Outer Space (a great B movie).
5. One of the publicity stunts was a $50,000 insurance policy against anyone dying from a heart attack while watching the film.
6. The movie premiered at the Fulton Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 1, 1968 and receive a standing ovation.
7. The Evans City Cemetery was the cemetery used in the original version of the film, but it could not be used for the 30th anniversary edition. Before filming the new footage, a tornado had torn through the Evans City Cemetery, and ironically, it unearthed several graves.
8. The house used for this film was loaned to the filmmakers by the owner, who planned to demolish it anyway, thereby ensuring that they could do whatever they wanted to the house.
9. There were two trucks used in the film. The first one used in the beginning of the film would not start for the trek-to-the-gas-pump scenes and had to be replaced. Unfortunately, they forgot to break the headlights.
10. The body upstairs in the house was made by director George A. Romero, who used ping-pong balls for the eyes.
11. At the time of the film's release, any work that did not include a copyright notice was assumed to be public domain. Since the film makers forgot to include this notice, the film slipped into the public domain.
12. This was one of the first films added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
13. One of the last big hits of the drive-in era.
14. The first movie filmed in Pittsburgh.
15. George A. Romero's feature debut.
16. Readers Digest tried to warn people away from watching the film in 1968 by claiming if it's ever watched, it will inspire cannibalism.
17. The real gravestone that Barbara (Judith O'Dea) cowers beside in the graveyard scene of the movie is that of Nicholas Kramer (1842-1917), whose remains are interred in the Evans City Cemetery in Jackson Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
18. In 2013, a stage adaptation of the film, executive produced by George A. Romero, Russell Streiner, and John A. Russo, debuted in Toronto. The play featured the story of the original film, followed by a series of alternate scenarios.
19. The filmmakers were accused of being "Satanically-inspired" by Christian fundamentalist groups for their portrayal of the undead feeding on flesh and of the Coopers' zombie child attacking her mother.
20. Bosco chocolate syrup was used to simulate the blood in the film.
21. When the zombies are eating the bodies in the burnt-out truck they were actually eating roast ham covered in chocolate sauce.
22. The gas pump was not bolted to the ground when the actress who played Barbra runs into it at the start of the film. She did it with so much force she almost tipped it over on the cameraman.
23. Though the radiation of a detonated satellite returning from Venus is theorized to be the cause of the dead rising and attacking the living, according to the filmmakers, the actual cause is never determined.
24. American International Pictures (AIP) considered releasing the film, but wanted George A. Romero to shoot an upbeat ending and add more of a love story subplot.
